I have another question to add to this
If it is server based: Does it mean time played in Ranked servers or Any server? -

i believe that it is server based because the server would just send the time in with the rest of the stats at the end of the round. to be prefectly honest i dont know, but this makes sense to me. and if this is true then it would probobly be ranked because those are the only servers that send stats to EA.Comment

All ranked servers keep track of every single action taken by each member. That's how demo files are created, they are really no more than a long list of all actions taken in the game, which BF2 then replicates for you to see.
Because of this, you are able to leave a server and rejoin later in the round and keep the same score (it just looks at what you've done before you left.
At the end of each round, the server sends this list of actions to the EA server, which then makes the appropriate updates. Simply being logged in will not count as time played, as they have no way to know of this.
You're going to need a server to report you as joining, and then disconnecting a certain amount of time later.
