no not really, if you google on them you will find out more detail, the 6800 can be modded into a gt quite easily apparently by opening up the extra pipes and it has a 256 bit memory access where the 6600gt is 128bit i think.

Combat medic is correct, His and my 6600GT's are better than the 6800 256. Look at the 3DMark 05 scores for the cards. Toms Hardware Guide puts the scores at:

        6800 256Mb = 2635
        6600GT 128Mb = 3681

The 6600GT thourghly wops the 6800 256. Thats more than 1000 points, which is a hell of a lot in 3DMark 05.

Dont go by 3D Mark - its a artificial benchmarking program optimised by ATi. I think you will find that the 6800 beats the 6600GT in all real game tests, esp at higher resolutions.

The 6800 GT may do, but the 6800 256 has the same number of pipelines and a slower clock and ram speed than the 6600GT.

              That does seem odd. I have a 9800pro 128 (OC= 360 core/ 420 ram)and just recently ran the '05 version. Got 2956 score. 1gig ram pc2700 cas2, AMD 2500 @ 2088.

Being that I play BF2 and not 3DMark05, I take these results a tad more over the THG ones.

*You also may want to look at these results as well...

The 6800 (Not GT) has 12 Pipelines and 256 bit memory
The 6600 GT has 8 Pipelines and 128 Bit Memory.

                  From Toms Hardware

                  UT2004 1024 x 768 4xAA 8xAF
                  6800 - 131 FPS
                  6600GT - 106 FPS

                  Doom 3 1024 x 768 4xAA 8xAF
                  6800 - 58 FPS
                  6600GT - 40 FPS

                  Chronicles of Riddick 1024 x 768
                  6800 - 60 FPS
                  6600GT - 46 FPS

                  Pacific Fighters 1024 x 768 4xAA 8xAF
                  6800 - 90 FPS
                  6600GT - 63 FPS

Although the 6800 is clocked slower it can do more per Mhz.

Actually, even if you could unlock the 4 extra pipes it wouldnt be worth it as you will need about 300Mhz more from the Vram to feed the extra pipes. Thats why Nvidia scaled the memory down to 700 - 750Mhz as this was suffiecient to feed 12pipes on a 256bit memory bus.

Sounds like the 6600GT is nipping at the 6800 heels in BF2 tho.
