Shouldnt this be running a bit smoother

Ive been tweaking the absolute **** out of this game since i bought it during the first week it was out and I have it almost figured out but I still had a quick question.

    Specs:

    Radeon 9700 pro 128 mb
    2.5 ghz P4
    Win xp sp 2
    1.5 ghz Corsair pc 2700
    Ac 97 onboard sound

With these specs I have set viewdistance to 100 running 1024x768 and everything on medium. The game actually looks and runs quite nicely now but I am getting a bit annoyed because after the hotfix patch I noticed a drop in fps. I usually get about 35-60 fps but that can even drop to an awful 25 or so during massive battles. I know my graphics will soon need an upgrading, but with the rest of my system, shouldnt I be getting more like a constant 60? Others with similar set ups seem to be running it a bit better, what can I do?

Make the screen resolution smaller = better fps.

I Have a 9700 non pro in a dell 2.4ghz pc and im surprised how well the game plays. i also like you tweaked more than i played at first. My card is overclocked and i now have a artic cooler on it. im able to run the game with all the settings on med with the texture filter on high, im going to start testing the effects, lighting or shadows on high next. my screen resoultion is
1125x864@100hz. the only prob i have is on some servers i get that annoying "theres a problem with your connection.

Your problem is not the 9700pro. it is this games crappy sound preformance that is giving you lag, try messing with the sound options (hardware, software, low quality, high quality).

A drop in resolution usually doesnt improve preformance as droping some of the other features in the game. Shadows, lighting , and reflections are always the first thing i turn down (im not sure if this game has settings for all 3 i cant remeber off hand).

Disable any anti virus software while you play the game, that will drastically help.

Reaaaaaaaaallly very interesting. So my system's sound could be the fps lagger? How is it possible that the sound is responsible for this? Also, what inexpensive sound card should I look to get?

Yes, sound does effect FPS. Many people don't realise this and cheap out on their sound cards when they build nice systems.

Inexpensive would be what? I recommened the Audigy2 ZS as that is the card this game was built on and for. With a few simple patches the problems alot of people are experience are resolved.

I would wait for Creative's new line of X-Fi sound cards, which are just around the corner. Even if you dont buy the new series, you know the Audigy 2s will drop in price, so either way you win!

The trick is being patient! :p
