Kind of new at this online stuff. Is it necessary to go through game spy to join online BF2 games?

Sadly yes, and if you try to use two different accounts it will probably confuse you to death, that's my personal experience.

WTF? no, you don't need gamespy. gamespy is for searching and joining servers, but you can use a browser from inside the game.
so, you don't need gamespy. more than that, many would tell you not to install it.

unfortunately, Gamespy is the backbone service that BF2 uses to validate login's. This means that even if you dont install gamespy, BF2 still relies on it to actually get your stats etc. This is why we had BF2 problems a few weeks back because gamespy got overloaded with people trying to get stats.

Thanks guys, when I try to create an account I get a screen freeze. Guess I'l have to try the gamespy route.

for the logging SERVICE yes you go through gamespy but to join a game u dont need it
there is an ingame browser

when i download bf2, i chose not to download gamespy. but it works anyway
