video lockup (one of many odd solutions)

I had to post this thread in the hopes that there may be someone out there with a similar problem which this could possibly help them solve.

    I have the following hardware/OS
    Asus P4P800 MB
    1G Mem
    Radeon 9800 Pro
    ViewSonic VP171b
    Windows 2000

When I originally installed the game, I was running the 4.12 Catalyst for my video card. I never patched to 1.01, as I had heard it was not stable before having the opportunity to apply it anyway.

But, when 1.02 was released, most people said it was stable, and most servers started switching to it. So, I did as well.

Now, I am not posititve why it happened or when it happened, but suddenly I was locking up, to the point of having to reboot, within two minutes of playing.

This means that I was loading the game, going to Multiplayer, selecting a server, logging on, loading the map, and entering play! Then, while I was moving the mouse, or moving around, or just about anything, BAM, I was locked up.

I spent about 4 days reading these forums, and trying a number of things.

    I took these steps:
I installed the 5.7 Catalyst drivers (no joy)
I rolled back to the 5.6 Catalyst drivers (no joy)
I uninstalled all ATI products and rebooted to the default VGA driver
I used Driver Cleaner and rebooted again.
I installed 5.7 Catalyst once more, with still no luck.

So, I decided to start trying to mess with the level of hardware acceleration, or the slider that went between Performance and Quality, to see if this would do anything.

That is when I noticed that when selecting the Monitor tab, I realized it said Plug N Play. I thought, "That's strange, i am sure I had the drivers for my VP171b loaded!"

So, I went to the ViewSonic sight, dl'd the latest driver and installed it. Then I went to check the settings, and that is where I saw the very subtle difference. When I was running the Plug N Play Monitor driver, i had the refresh rate set to the maximum allowable for that driver which was 75Hz.

Lo and behold, when the proper driver was loaded, the maximum refresh rate allowable was 70Hz. I still felt this to be a complete fluke until I went in and played a complete game, which lasted about 20 minutes. I had to leave for work, and anxiuosly watched the clock, looking forward to trying again in the evening, but being certain it was going to lock up again.

Well, after missing out for 4 days, I ended up playing about 7 hours straight, and since this time (some 5 days ago) I have not had a single lockup.

So, it didn't matter what driver I was using for the monitor, as i was trying to tell the hardware that it was OK to refresh at 75 when this was beyond the capabilities.

So, I felt it was important to make sure that this was adequately explained, in the hopes that it may take another frustrated individual and get them into battle! :)
