i suppose you host a game using the Windows Server and then join it but i would like to know how to really do this too.

Also i got a single BFRecorded movie back in the Demo-Days and i coudl only play it through the game. Can the recorder convert it to an AVI or do i need something like Fraps to do that?

      Start a SP game...

When u wanna record bring up ur console and type demo.recordDemo [demo name]

When u wanna finish recording bring up console again and type demo.stopRecording.

Go to program files/ea games/bf2/mods/bf2/demos and you'll see two files in there with the name u gave ur recording.
Copy/paste or cut/paste them into my documents/battlefield2/profiles/default/demos folder (you'll have to create the demos folder urself).

Then start bf2 and go to community and u should see ur recorded demo there on the right.

Highlite it and click on play file, let the map load and then click on join game.

Use ur forward/backward/right/left keys and move ur mouse to move around urself and use ur mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

Press ur jump key to cycle through different players.

To free camera just right click ur mouse and use ur movement keys, crouch, prone keys and mouse to move the camera where u want anywhere on the map.

Double clicking ur movement keys and holding em down on the second click will move u a lot faster.

Hold down ur main radio key to bring up the playback rose which will allow u to slow/speed up/pause/restart etc the demo.

does this work the same way in multiplayer or does it have to be set on the server side?

I haven't messed with creating AVI files yet so I can't tell u in my own words but have a look here, the bf recorder itself can create ur recordings into an AVI format... http://www.planetbattlefield.com/bf2/game/bfrecorder/

Unfortunately the server ur playing on must have it set up and there's not many that do coz of the large bandwidth problems it creates. If u host a LAN game urself with a few of ur mates then u could record it on the puta that is running the map, then give all ur mates the files.

here's some screenies I took from a recording I did......
