I used to have a Radeon 9600 128MB, and recentley bought a 9800Pro 128 MB. I then realised that my FPS didn't go up a whole lot, so I started to regret my spending of $250... Was it a stupid decision to buy a card with the same ammount of VRAM?

I think BF2 in some situations is CPU limited. -
Frankly, yes. Not just because it has the same amount of ram, but because that's really not much of an upgrade. Should have gotten at least a radeon10 or geforce6 series. Not a very good investment.Comment

You should have benchmaked the before and after to really see the difference if any. Also, i'd format your pc after changing cards as well as make sure i have the newest drivers for my card. However, since they are such similar models, not sure how nessicary it'd beComment

$250 for a 9800 pro?
Where did you buy it? I got mine (a few months ago, upgraded from a GeForce 2 MX :laugh: ) off newegg for about $130.Comment

if you spent $250 for 9800pro you got riped off big time. 6600GT is worth less than that and it pwns 9800 by long way. 9800 sucks at BF2, IMO even 6600gt sucks at BF2 unless you dont care about the full potential of the game (eg no AA and medium quality), thats just me.
Also VRam is not everything, most people think 256mb > 128mb therfor video card with 256mb vram > vcard with 128mb vram, but today in most cases its the VCore thats important, 6800 vcore with 256mb of vram beats a geforce2 with 1g of vram if possible.Comment

First off, your gf6/gf2 analogy is basically invalid. Secondly, yes, 256mb is better than 128, especially if you like nice high res textures; however this has more to do with capacity than it does speed, which is how you talk about it. Lastly, vcore is only how much voltage the core is getting, which isn't directly related to speed. Please know what you're talking about before you start giving out advice. The amount of VRAM wasnt a problem.. its just the core technology.. the GPU. In many games, the newer cores (the x800 and x850) perform TWICE as good as a 9x00 series card. You probably spent a bit much for that card considering the performance you get out of it in new games is sub-par compared the to the x800 or x850. You might want to post your other system specs, because if you have a bottleneck elsewhere in your system, the fastest graphics card in the world cant help that. You could have a top of the line card, and too little memory or to slow of a processor, and it would perform like you have a shittier card. Oftentimes you need to remove a bottleneck for your new card to really shine.Comment
