    Problem connecting

    Hey,

I've tried playing today and I keep getting "The server has refused the connection" I don't know what this means, any help would be appreciated on how to sort it out.

    Thanks,
    Chedz

Same here, but only with the 1.02 patch

I was playing the unpatched game fine untill Monday and when any game was just about to start, I got a message saying that the game had to be the unmodified version. I figured this was because I didn't patch it yet and the server was patched. So I got around to patching the game and now I get this error and can't even log on at all. I tried uninstalling and its the same thing, unmodified game error with it unpatched, server refusing connection with it patched.

What the hell is this? Any help would be much appreciated.

You only need to install the 1.02 (hotfix patch) for now, see below.

(not the 1.01 as well, forgetabout the 1.01 completely)
"When" the new patch 1.03 (and further patches) comes out, the 1.03 (and further patches) patch will come with instructions that "may be different" from these.

How to install patch 1.02 For BF2 correctly.

You must compleatly uninstall the game as told by EA first.
How to.......See Tyranus thread in this link..................
      http://forums.totalbf2.com/showthread.php?t=15912
This will get rid of old patch issues !
You can't patch over a patch over a patch you may get away with it twice but its not recommended doing the patch more than once,...as it will cause conflict of files.

Have you got enough space on your hard drive?
      The patch needs around 17MB.

      1) Create a file in your hard drive rename it BF2 Patch v 1-02 (normally C:)

How to do it > Start > My computer > Drive where you wish to save the file normally C: > Right click > New > folder > enter the new name "BF2 Patch v 1-02" (or right click on the new file click rename and rename it "BF2 Patch v 1-02"

      2) Choose a site to download the 1.02 patch link....
      http://forums.totalbf2.com/showthread.php?t=16052 Click link.. click download.

      3) When the small box comes up with "Run" "Save" "Cancel" click "SAVE" and save it in the above file.
How to > the file "BF2 Patch v 1-02" should still be showing as the designated file where the patch will be saved so just save it.

      4) When saved it will ask you if you wish to Run "(you do wish this now)" so yes "Run" Ok.

      5) It will take a little time to run let it.
It will tell you that you have patched successfully.

      6) NOW "Do" the things in this link......
      http://forums.totalbf2.com/showthread.php?t=16424

      7) Run the game and have fun.

Issues you may have had when downloading / running patch........

If you get "patch failed error" this could mean.....

      1) Your download, of files for the patch, did not complete properly. (re-download the patch and save it in a new file (renamed) then run.

      2) Somewhere in installing, your bf2 game program files and/or the dl of the patch have become corrupted (for best results uninstall BF2 then reinstall the game and re-download the patch)

      3) You did not have enough space on Hard Drive for patch.

Due to the lack of servers, if you are using the automatic, "Play Now" the issue could be that you are joining a server with high ping therefore the chances of you getting connection interruptions Ci's or the error message >>>" There is a problem with your connection" will be high risk.

The consideration for online players and EA is to use one or the other to join servers "not both".

Preferably choose your own server from a/the list manually.

This will help peoples connection rate and reduce lag in servers and players get to use low ping servers.

Get rid of the "PLAY NOW" option EA its foe Xboxes and play stations only.

Your FPS are more than good.
What server are you connecting to and what PING are you getting for the server before join it.
IMHO IT's not your rig but connection issues.
      It's probably not your fault.

Use manual connection to connect to online game for smaller ping.

BTW did you know that the yellow bar on top of the yellow triangle next to the word ping...... once the page has loaded if you click on the before mentioned yellow icon twice, it will produce the ping list from smallest ping to largest.

An easy/manual way to update punkbuster! Updated

      Link for the punkbuster download.....

      For Windows: pbweb.exe or pbweb.zip

For Linux: pbweb.x86 For Mac OSX: pbwebmac.zip Copy the saved PBweb.app into the PB folder and run it from there.)

When the box comes up with RUN SAVE CANCEL (When downloadind from the net) you need to do this >>> click save > then save it to your pb (punkbuster) file.

      Source Punkbuster http://www.punkbuster.com/index.php?page=updatepb.php

      EG for Windows.......

This file "pbweb.exe" should be saved in (save it in) >>> pb.

Where to find the "pb" file >>>>

My Computer > The "Drive" you saved the Battlefield 2 game in C: or E: or whatever "normally > C:" > Battlefield 2 > pb

If and when you have saved the file (or the file was already found) click > "PB web updater" file Found by >

Start > My Computer > The "Drive" you saved the Battlefield 2 game in C: or E: or whatever "normally C:" > Battlefield 2 > pb > click "PB web updater"

An MS dos file will run (let it run till it says "to exit press a key"

This may apply to you Corporal Taylor and others. (try and read between the lines of the following).

You have corrupted files m8 the patch did not know which BF2 file to install to therefore you had to do it manually.
(you probably have had problems with the game before now and left some files in your drive) If I were you i would manually delete all bf2 files and reinstall)

I would look into it m8 if you want the game to run properly!

If you get "patch failed error" this could mean.....

      1) Your download, of files for the patch, did not complete properly. (re download the patch and save it in a new file (renamed) then run.

      2) Somewhere in installing, your bf2 game program files and/or the dl of the patch have become corrupted (for best results reinstall the game and re-download the patch)

      3) You did not have enough space on Hard Drive for patch.

Of course you do this at your own risk!

      I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply but nothing you mentioned works.
I can only log on to unranked servers when I don't have the patch installed.
To clairfy, the "Server has refused..." error comes up after I select my profile and it tries to log into the account server, when I patch the game.

EA really has to do something about this. Updating anything should not cause this much frustration.

You state "I can only log on to unranked servers when I don't have the patch installed"

Quite simply then, the game files are ok, Look very carerfully at the way you are "installing" and "RUN"

          1) the patch

          2) the manual way to update punkbuster

The answer is in 1) and 2)
All the information is at hand to do the above.
I wish I could come and do it for you, I feel, you are so close to sorting it out.

I have the same problem as Malice, in other words when I try to log-in my connection is refused by the account server.

Please note that I've had some problems with the 1.02 patch and I updated BF2 using the different fixes proposed in few other threads.

              Server refused connection

I keep getting this "server refused connection" problem. When i first had the game it worked perfectly no problem but when the patch came out i installed it. Only to realize that it wont connect to the server. This really makes me angry and cant belive that ea would release a patch that doesn't help me but wont let me play the game. i have tried both unintalling and reinstalling plus i tried to manually update punkbuster but it said i couldnt connect to the ip address. I would really like to play the game before patch v1.03 comes out and fixes this even if they do. So if anybody has had the same problem and has made it work i would seriously like to know how to do it.

Did you use the forum search tool m8, or just happen to see this post.

Have you uninstall the game then installed the patch, installed the punkbuster file then run?

You have not given much info to go by.

"i couldn't connect to the ip address" is your answer you have a firewall on a router or on SP2 or as a separate program running that is blocking the outgoing signal locate the software that is stopping this and manually allow it to connect.
Flaming will not give you a fix m8 just stick to the facts.

I'm not sure what I could be doing wrong, I mean, installing the patch and updating punkbuster can only be installed one way right? I don't get any error messages when installing or updating so you would think I would be in good shape.
Does the patch have to be run from a specific directory as the punkbuster update? That is my last guess and if that doesn't work, I'll just settle playing unranked servers till 1.03 comes out...and I'll have even more problems.

Thanks for the help, it's great that this site has this section on it.

I have produced this to help people, as far as i can see it's a pretty, cough* fool proof *cough, of how to install the game, patch, and punkbuster, it tells you how to and where to sore the files and when and how to run.

If you find any problems with this advice, get back to me, and I will address the issues.

You should delete the BF2 "demo" if you have installed it in the past to your hard drive!

                      ================================================== =========================================

Uninstall all files folders etc to do with BF2 ,Punkbuster-for this game, patches and Battlefield 2 demo.

You must completely uninstall the game as told by EA first.
How to.......See Tyranus thread in this link..................

                      ================================================== ========================================

An extra deep scan way to see if there are any files/folders left on your hard drive associated with BF2, Punkbuster-for this game, patches and Battlefield 2 demo. .
Do the following "after" uninstalling BF2 the way you would normally and or the way above........

                      Is your Hard Drive partitioned?

                      A) If not and you are just using C: to store all, then uninstall 1) BF2 files, 2) all patch files 3) all punkbuster files the way you have done in the past.......

Then use the "windows" search tool hunt out and "kill" delete all 1) BF2 files, 2) all patch files 3) all punkbuster files found on this C: drive.

If you have found any files that still exist on your hard drive "after" uninstalling them the way you have done in the past using windows search tool then IMHO you are half way there to solving your problem.

                      B) If you "have partitioned your HD" then do the above for all partitions of your HD.

It's a long winded way but better than a fresh start "wipe/reinstall windows" for your HD.

What do you mean use windows search? What file name(s) or extensions am I searching for?

                      How to.............
START > My Computer > Top left you will see a magnifying glass with search (click) > all files and folders > put in the file name > battlefield < AND after you have searched for that do a separate search for > bf2 < (for bf2 files folders) > now/also where it says "LOOK IN" click the down arrow and highlight local hard drive, C: > search > any files folders? > make a note plz and tell me of any that you have found > delete any that have been found.

                      Also Look for > bf2patch v 102 < AND > bf2patch v 101 < for the 2 patches. (don't forget the demo files)

Also Look for > pbweb < and > PB web updater < to delete manual punkbuster update files.

You can cut and paste the search word in-between the > < don't change spelling.
                      Please note :-
You may know that when changing altering adding and/or deleting some programs for all the effects to take place (work) you need to reboot when asked, or/if, say you have uninstaled BF2 and not rebooted, but have reinstalled the game, then rebooted, there is a huge risk of over righting files and getting corrupt file messages.
                      ================================================== ==================================================

Install the game from cd > DvD
Create a file in the drive you wish to save the game normally C:

How to do it > Start > My computer > Drive where you wish to save the file normally C: > Right click > New folder > enter the new name "Battle field 2 fresh install" (or right click on the new file click rename and rename it "Battle field 2 fresh install"
load the cd/dvd, start install, when it comes to where do you wish to save the installation find the above renamed file and save the game in it.

                      ================================================== ================================================== =

Don't use the in game play now option.

Get rid of the "PLAY NOW" option
EA its for Xboxes and play stations only.

Your FPS are more than good.
What server are you connecting to and what PING are you getting for the server before join it.
IMHO IT's not your rig but connection issues.
                      It's probably not your fault.

Use manual connection to connect to online game for smaller ping.

BTW did you know that the yellow bar on top of the yellow triangle next to the word ping...... once the page has loaded if you click on the before mentioned yellow icon twice, it will produce the ping list from smallest ping to largest

If you get...You are getting "Server requires Unmodified Content" because....

                      1) you have tampered with your BF2 files.

                      2) Your installation of BF2 is corrupted!
A corrupted file does not mean that you have a virus or have messed around with the content per say, "BUT" it dose mean that "a" or more than one file has been changed from it's original purpose, from the programs original intention.
(more than likely that one has copied the same programme to the same hard drive more than once. The same files have been over written and/or duplicated and the program dose not know where to draw the information it needs from or where to send information to)

Run the game and have fun.

Of course you do this at your own risk!

I hope I have covered and remembered everything and this helps.

I have the same problems, but i dont even get into a server.

I have Norton off, Battlefield 2 allowed by Windows Firewall, and i cant find my router.

This is what happens to me

                        I log in
Sometimes i dont get a server list
If i get one and click on a server it says "Failed to connect check network settings"
But sometimes i luckly get in, so my settings are ok.

Plus = it worked with patch(so thats not the problem either) and suddenly it started to give this problems while i didnt change anything.

Also i have already did a clean install, so can anyone help?

Stil cant connect, it came out of the blue

                        *clean install
                        *patch 1.02 worked oke
                        *nothing changed
                        *firewall off
*Windows Firewall on(didnt solve anything by switching it off)
*Cant find my router( i belive i have a Sweex or something like that)

                        But =

*sometimes i can luckyly somehow come in normally(so my connections are normal)
*most of the times i get a updated server list (not always, so thats a problem too)

Pls help me, The one thats fixes this is the best.
