P4 3.0 -vs- Pd 3.0

MY brother is buying a Dell because he is in the Army and doesent have much time for a build. He wants me to help him pick it out and he wants a good one so he might be able to play BF2 with me. Here is my only question. I have right now for him a P4 3.0, 6800 256MB, and 1 GB Ram. Well should I replace that P4 3.0 with this Pentium® D Processor 830 with Dual Core Technology (3GHz, 800FSB) ? Is it better enough to justify spending $203 on it? Thanks.

this computer is 3 years old, and i paid 1,000 for it (incl 9800pro and ram). it plays ALL my games on high, even bf2, and this thing has lasted me for 3 years, without any problems

how is that a rip off?

dells are good for certain people, and some people frown upon them, even if they have not owned one. I think your brother will be happy with a dell, i can't really make a proc recomendation, but i think either will play bf2 fine.

i can run everything on bf2 high, accept the textures and the AA


i currently run it on all medium, for more fps, i only turn on all high for single player (and it is a little laggy, but still playable)

if he doesn't need a GREAT computer, just save the $200 and get the normal processor, it will play just fine AND he will save a pretty penny

Also I'm gonna add the fact that this computer is %25 off meaning hes saves $476.50. Thats incrediable. Plus you cant beat Dells tech support. I build my own computer so dont tell me that building is better and Dell sucks, because they dont.

Jesus Christ, why the hell wouldn't you people answer his question instead of debating over how good/bad dell is. Get a life.

You will see virtually no improvement with the Intel Pentium Dual Core processors for BF2 because BF2 doesn't support multithreading which would enable it to utilize the other core. Dual Core processing is ment more for taxing things like video rendering and encoding, with which most proffesional programs support multithreading.

The next thing coming to games that will be significantly improving performance (CPU performance, that is) is the utilization of 64 bit processors. However, Pentium 64bit processors are ALOT worse than AMD's counterpart. So if you're going to go Intel, just go for the 3.0ghz vanilla P4.

plus dell has alot of coupons floating around for 500$ off etc. but since your bro was in the army im assuming he's going through a military discount program system for his computer, and they usually only offer dell, so thats probably why he wants one no? dells are actually really good for the money, but sometimes they charge crazy for some parts of the pc. just watch out, like if 1gb of ram costs 250$...avoid and buy your own ram and stick it in there yourself. otherwise hope u and ur bro have fun.

No it isn't worth it, especially if he doesn't need a super computer. The only way dual core is worth it is with an AMD. The performance difference from an Intel Dual Core to a AMD Dual core, is night and day.
