    reflective armor

ok, in the manual it sais something about reflective armor on tanks and how you could possibly get a TK if you fire at it from the wrong angle...

now, I've tried to kill myself by firing at a tank, but to no avail.

anyone ever succeeded in getting a TK or maybe killing himself by firing at the "reflective armor" of a tank?

i have a feeling this "feature" never made it into retail

I don't think it did. Try firing an anti-tank at it and see what happens. That might work I'm not sure, lol.

No I haven't heard anything about that.

      A-ha!

Yet another missing feature thread (Yamft)

The feature you're missing is called stray-shot and shrapnel. Both, not present in the game. The game models splash-dammage and impact dammage.
Normally when a anti-personal shell explodes it gives a crapload of shrapnel. Granades too. Which is why you wouldn't want a direct line of sight to your granade, even when you're quite out of the splash dammage radius.
The stray-shots can be had at virtually any surface, if only the impact angle is low enough.
Also it's noteworth that if you fire from an angle not lower then 45degree on a concrete surface, the impact will send concrete rubble flying around. If somebody is right next to the impact point, these splinters have the power of penetrating a bit of cloth and skin and stick in your flesh, A few milimeters deep. If you happen to have enough rounds of ammunition, no direct line of fire and no explosives but a cornered enemy (say like in a bunker), this is an option of driving them out of cover, or letting them bleed to death very slowly.

hehe, thanks for the tips (in case they ever add a feature like this with a patch)

so...i can understand why they didn't add this feature for every surface (concrete etc. like you say), but why print this stuff about reflecting armor in the manual when it's not even in the game?

maybe it is for the tanks, and this is why the AT rockets sometimes miss from point blank range - they just hadn't bothered to make them deflect, they just go right through

I think the feature he's actually referring to is called reactive armour, which is the boxes fitted all over the outsides of certain vehicles like the MEC tank. Basically it's boxes of explosives strapped over the outer armour, and when a HEAT or HESH round from an anti-tank weapon hits the armour it causes the reactive armour explosive to go off, blasting outwards and either dissapating the original explosion or destroying the piercing/squash head round as it trys to penetrate. Basically it's a cheap way to get a lot more protection, but it does mean that any hit on the tank blows back outwards with more force than it usually would, which would indeed cause more damage to people outside the vehicle than in it.

Twas taken out becuase the physics were to buggy to translate to all users on line and the appropriate damage and particles flying about created too much net traffic in practise. I read that somewhere in a E3 report or something will hunt down link...

nah it is ricochets. what he said is indeed in the manual.
most likely cut to make it less cpu intensive. its bad enough w/ all the bullets etc flying through the air atm, can you imagine if the game had to do ricochets for each of those rounds as well? the TK crap would probably 10 times worse as well.

bah alfonse beat me to it.

shrapnel, stray shots, riochets, whatever. You don't actually have to simulate each single one of those. They fly to fast anyway for the eye to see.

Just let the server compute if yo stand in line of sight of an explosion when it happens, calculate a chance you get hit, and let him kill you displaying "master foo [HEAP:shrapnel] pyalot"

if it was like that, it would rock. atm there is no need to 'duck and cover' even if a tank blows up in front of you because everybody knows the safe distance. you would still have a distance that you didnt have to hide beyond but it would/should be alot greater.

make it a fairly high chance of being hit though. a tank blows up in front of you, bits of it are gonna hit you.

I have shot a javy missle at a tank. It did in fact hit the tank. And then it did in fact, spray off the tank, and hit a team mate nearby in a humvee. Killing him and resulting in me getting a TK.
I saw this. I didnt shoot then turn and hide. I shot, watched the hit...watched the bounce, watched the TK. lol. I believe this feature is in the game. As I have witnessed it with my own eyes.
And no..the tank didnt blow up and causing a tk. No the humvee wasnt RIGHT next to the tank. But the angles were pure perfect, like a game of pool, when i got that TK. hehehe

I dont know about reflective armour but I know for a fact all the vehicles in BF2 have electric armour, touch it and die.

The armor on tanks and apcs is reflective, if you fire a shell at a shallow angle to the armor plate it hits the shot will reflect off and explode behind it. Why not test it out before claiming that the feature is not in the game...
