ok get this. its not realistic. stop saying that.

    1st~you get a lock.
    2nd~ you fire.
3rd~heat seeking missile flies towards intended target.
    4th~target launches flare countermeasures.
*flares work by burning very, very hot. this fools the missile into tracking it instead of the aircraft*
5th~missile loses its lock on the aircraft and it escapes.
*right so far so good, now it gets stupid*
6th~instead of the missile attacking the flares, it decides it no longer wants to track them and goes off looking for a more distant heat source. often a friendly.

see the problem? the missiles never actually track the flares at all. the flares dont seem to draw the missile, they just mask the aircraft.

The missle is going to track the closest ie strongest heat source at any givin time.
This is why a flare will cause it to miss its target. A flare is super hot, thats what they are designed to do. The missle wont then explode when it reaches the flare, it keep sgoing, and finds the next heat source. This is perfectly reasonable and correct. They only thing I dont like, is the missle can be easily out turned by a good pilot who knows it comming, as its own turning circle is quite limited, yet it will do a near 90 degree turn to get friendlies.

          no.

air to air/ground to air missiles do not come into contact before they explode. they operate on a proximity detonator, they get within a very short range of the heatsource and explode forwards. it creates a shotgun like effect of shrapnel that ruins the target aircrafts airframe causing it to drop out of the sky.

they would get within a few meters of any flare they are tracking and then explode. they would not go through it.

learn not ro relly on your missiles. and lol, when i'm being chased in a jet that's my counter measures, other flying objects wether its a friendly unit of mine of an enemy unit fly right by them missiles goes off most of the time, works like a charm.

The missles are pretty annoying. I try not to fire if I see a friendly air unit on the map anywhere infront of us. I normally just stay on my bombs and use my guns to take the jet down.

the missile is supposed to keep track of the closest heatsource that require least curse correction. Thus, if there is a friendly jet crossing (im talking about 90° here!) it is not supposed to loose track of its targert. And if there is another heatsource closer but off the path of the missile that it is not supposed to do a 90° turn on a dime and close in to that target because a. a real life missile wouldnt even see that target. b. that move is just impossible.

its kinda funny that a missile will miss its target because it cant turn fast enough but when it comes to hitting a friendly it can turn on a dime.

Seems like the missles in the game expload on contact rather than proximity. Weather or not their real world counterparts do is irrelevent due to the fact that its a game. Some people (not necessarily the above quoted) seem to forget that the game has its own set of laws and rules that must be adapted to to be an effective player. It is Not A Bug.

Of course but 99% of the time you can't see any friendly unit because of the "fog" of war and 99% it will hit one, I stopped using everything related to heatseaking.

Example: I was following an ennemy jet, he wasn't really used to the game as he didn't try to avoid me, I fire two missiles, they go straight behind him and one change of course to hit an ennemy (whoah first time here !!!) helicopter on the ground, it went so fast that I lost the missile in a split of a second.

The other missile passed next of the plane (remember: he didn't make anything to avoid, just a straight line in the sky) and went for those oil/gas burning towers following the course of them ( 5 if I count right) to my base and destroy a fully loaded BH. Now if it isn't a wtf situation ... at least it could hit one of the towers but not going one after one until it finds an friendly unti.

How messed missiles can be ...

The thing that bothers me is that it ALWAYS targets a friendly. It'll NEVER pick an enemy aircraft. Has anyone accidentally hit an enemy aircraft but not the one you were targeting?

Plus if they're freaking heatseaking, why the hell do I need to LOCK ON? If I'm locking on, then isn't it a radar guided missle? If you lose the lock the missle will NEVER hit the target, even if they don't drop flares.

I'm with who ever said they just use the cannons - just gun em down.

So if the missles are heatseaking why do you have to wait for them to lock?
Shouldent you be able to just see the helo and the missles will go for the heat source?

Thats what i dont get, if they make you lock onto the target then fire and you missles still hit a friendly helo then WHY THE HELL DID I HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO LOCK!

Im going to start aiming for friendly helos... when they release the flares the missle will go straight to an enemy helo wont it?

I thought the HSM(heat seeker missile)was MEANT to follow the cloests heat source they can find?
