BF2 Optimization mess up?

I've had the lag spikes as well, my friend. I know how you feel.

Do they happen every 5-10 minutes, and last for about 3+ seconds? If so, that's EXACTLY my problem, and I've yet to find a solution.

And yes, I already did that IGN Optimization guide beforehand.

I get MAJOR lag spikes with Arty. It's my onboard sound......getting a proper card when i get back from my hols.

Do you have onboard or a proper sound card?That could be your problem.

There are errors with the newest catalyst drivers from ATI. Roll them back.

I'm surprised you can even run the game decently with 256MB RAM. 512MB is the minimum. But, yeah, probably the new drivers.

okay

So I went into device manager and under "Display adapters" i have 2 things listed. (1.) 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9800 [I rolled this one back till it said 2003 then restarted] (2.) Radeon 9800 Series - Secondary [I tried to roll this one back too, but it said that there were no drivers under this to roll back]

I went into the game and nothing changed at all still huge lag spikes every minute to 30 seconds with the good old "There is a problem in your connection" message and freezing.

Did i roll back the drivers correctly?

This only started after i did the Optimization guide. It was good before.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING THE GUIDE ON IGN DONT SAVE YOURSELF FROM GOING THROUGH THIS TERRIBLE MESS!!!

I would remove ALL drivers for the 9800 then go install catalyst 5.6 (not the newest as it has problems)...

go DL drivercleaner that uninstalls all nvidia and ati drivers......

When I think lag spikes, I think connection problems. I had problems with my DSL also so I went ahead and switched to cable. Worked ok for me.

For the record, I have 256MB RAM as well and I get occasional "freezes" also. I'd assume it's from our RAM having to clear its cache because we have so little of it. And BF2 is a RAM hog.

this happened to me a while ago...turns out something was up with my modem so i just reset it and everything was fine...

even with 1gb ram this game makes acces to hard disk.. so shut up complaining and get decent hardware to play on!

if u don't have proper computer why do complain?
install omega drivers www.omegadrivers.net (it gets around 30% more of your video card)
get a decent procesor.. at least 3ghz p4 or a64 3000+... get some more ram.. at least 1gb and good video card.. at least 9800 pro and u will see that u don't have any problem with this game!

and do also a defrag of your hard drive at least at a few days if u play this game more than a couple hours per day!

i don't see any difference with those omega drivers. i looked at the screenshots they provided and as far as i can tell, they are the same screenshots

AMD 2400+ @2.0
512DDR @ 266 ( Mixed memory modules 2x256 )
ATI 9600 256DDR ( latest drivers )
Soundblaster live 5.1Digital ( Value card )
Maxtor 160 GB hard drive 8MB cache 7200Rpm
Sony Dvd/CD +RW 32x CD-ROM
Telia braodband 8MB connection

now this isnt much of a machine but it does run BF2 on low settings , basically i didnt change anything in the settings except for my controls ..
i can say if you want to make the game run better i would suggest tuning windows first ,so it will perform well . then it will be alot easier to adjust the settings in the game . but this is only my idea ..i experience lag as well as most of us do that arent millionaires to keep up with PC technology ..we have to suffice with our 6 month to 2 year old machines ,LOL
anyway if you would like some help with working on the windows side . PM me and i can give you some tutorials on how to set up windows first .
this isnt a 2 minute tuning guide to windows , its understanding how windows works and setting certain settings to your needs ..
