Same thing here... "Back to desktop" bug after 10 minutes of flawless play...

My config is the same as yours:

      P4 3.2GHz
      1GB RAM corsair twinx cas2
      GeForce 6600GT agp8x
      SATA & ATA disks

Ran Memtest for 5 hours without any errors.
Tried all kind of workarounds found on different boards without any results.
Maybe it has something to do with the 6600 gt agp?

      Any help would be appreciated.
      G.

yeah, i used to get it. i probably will get it in the future. EA has alot of video card problems. one thing i found was my processer overheated to quickly and i had to tighten the heatsink to make sure it made contact with the processer. if that wasnt the problem, it did stop the crashing anyway. im overclocking AMD Athlon XP 3200+

              LOL

Okay, reinstall your video drivers, sound drivers, and DirectX 9.0c. Hopefully this will fix the issues.

If your'e using an audigy2 you need to get the beta drivers with OpenAL support. If not you need to set your hardware rendering to medium, or just switch it to software.

You could have some serious problems uninstalling directx,
with your signal/ vidcard/ etc. so watch it. I definitely recommend
uninstall of video drivers/ run of cab, driver cleaner as in the readme.

I had ASUS PC Probe runnin in background, everything else off except BF2 and criticals. It was set to notify me of 72C CPU temps and it sure did get there fast. All that 100% CPU usage heated it up like crazy. BF2's killin my system, even when I do finally get it cooled a bit more. My 6800GT is just losing power after a while and losing signal to monitor, H O T.. .
