Bad Files.

I agree with Odd BAll on the files.

If the files are corrupt when loaded there is nothing that will fix it or get you past the error until the files are corrected.

My very first install was flawless, zero errors.
I played up to my present score and rank without a single CTD, or error of any other kind. Not one.

When I tried to install the first patch, 1.01, I got errors with the patch failing and all hell broke loose and I haven't played since.

I did manage to re install once, about the 4th time and continue playing un-patched.

No changes to my hardware and memory is fine, 1 gig (2x512) Kingston PC3200 CL3 400. All this on a very stable Gigabyte GA8-KNXP rev2 mobo, WDD 320GB 7200 RPM, SATA, Leadtek A400GT 6800 256 AGP, Creative Audigy 2 Value.

In my personal experience, 10 times now install and uninstalling this game, the Md5 errors I get always show up when the client.zip files are being copied from the various maps in the /levels/ folder, the 12 maps.
My last install went perfect up to the very last when I got an error with the ...movies\intro.bik file.

Sure enough, game would not load past 75% of the startup intro movie. (usually I hit ESC to bypass, but let it run to see if it would CTD)

I had saved to a hotswap drive, all the files in the bf2 folder, so I just copied and pasted that one in and it worked.

Updated PB and ran it no errors playing unpatched.
Not many unpatched servers left, so I tried the patch again as directed using the Patch Workaround from the cmd command.
Since then I can't join anything for the "...unmodified content. Please revert your version..." error.
Tried the PB update again, same error.

I have played all the maps in single player without any crashes, bugs or any problems, so I think the files are now complete somehow.

I just think my patching somehow corrupts some files when installing the patch.
Version is correct and patch gave the green light, but still won't run.

Long story short, I was thinking that since I have a huge amount of unused space and plenty of bandwidth available on both my company websites, I could host the original downloadable files for the levels and provide links for direct downloads to whomever needs them.

That way if someone gets the error on installation, they can note the file and download a good one to get it running.
I would, however, obviously need all 12 of the levels to be as they should be, uncorrupted.
I would offer this as a service for as long as it didn't lead to costing me a huge amount on my website bills. I am sure it might cure a lot of problems.

Does this make sense? Any ideas here?

I just wanna play, man!

You allready runned memtest on your machine? My system ran absolutely stable too and I had no CTDs or BSODs but big zip-files always were changed when written to disk - no matter of the source they were installed or copied from. So your uploaded files wouldn´t have helped me, because they would have been screwed up by my machine when written to HDD.
The MD5-Check (MD5 Summer) gave me 5 errors yesterday but those files are different from UK to Germany so I don´t care about it. Of course I have to see, if this "modified-content-error" is history now because I only joined once yesterday and had no map-change but I think it really was the RAM.

Yup same here m8, copied over some of my Bro's files, then i tried his entire directory as EA suggested, still corrupt.

For those looking in this thread for a fix i recomend you find your problem first, and how deep it goes e.g. 1.02 poblems, modified content etc. could simply be the patch didnt update your files (even though the .exe ran fine and said installation complete). I think alot of these problems are related, but not dependant on one another. I NEVER get all files to pass the 1.00 md5 checks, and every time i install the corrupted files are different. I have a playable version at the moment as odball pointed out, but id rather find the solution to this problem rather than piecing together an install which kinda works. And when 1.03 comes out, you can guarantee these probs will get worse

Already been confirmed in this thread that it isnt a PB error m8.

hmm.. i had a friend send me the client.zip for karkand and the common_client.zip (note: those were the only two i got MD5 errors on during installation) and i swapped them with mine and that fixed the modified content errors for me. theres gotta be something else on your end thats either making them corrupt again, or youre getting the modified content errors for another reason.

or something like that im really not sure, this is all very strange.

Ok fellas whats the verdict - I'm going to take out the ram i recently put in and try and copy Ojects_client.zip across again and see if it passes checksum. But like Hirogen I'm keen to see this issue resolved before patch 1.03 otherwise is going to only get worse and be an absolute pitch to patch. So lets resolve this damn issue :|:

Have you tested your RAM m8? What was the results?

One guy had an interesting theory. He said all his files were fine but he still got the error from time to time, he figured that something was being written by a server that when read back caused his files to be corrupt. He said he changed then entire BF2 directory including all files and sub-folders to read only and he hasnt a problem since :hmm:

that sounds plausible, i still get modified content errors now but instead of being 99% of the time its more like 1% and it usually goes through on the second retry. do you know if he changed even the hidden folders to read-only or just the ones out in the open? i might give that a shot if the problem comes back.

Found the fix!

Uninstall SP2..... worked for me! You may need to reformat.

Just for Info: New RAM-Module arrived yesterday. I played on several severs without any "unmodified-errors" - I think I found the source for this error in my sys and was able to eliminate it. Only lost connection to a server once but I think that´s a different issue.
As benefit - my system ist fast as hell at startup. Next week I get a second 6600GT from a friend of mine (he´ll go on holiday and has no use for it while lying at the pool) and I´m looking forward to the performance-boost.

I think we not what the cause of the error is now fellas, just removed the new stick of 512 of ram i put in my machine prior to full install of BF2, and guess what for the first time no checksum error straight up with that farken Ojects_client.zip file everything passed. Hirogen I therefore suggest you swap the ram from your brothers machine into yours and run your checksum, all being well it will pass. This issue looks as though its related to ram fellas. Its taken several weeks but I reckon thats the issue, dont believe your comp when its saying no problems with your ram if your getting these random md5 checksum errors you can bet your bottom dollar that your ram is interferring and causing the problems. I can hopefully now play any server when I please without getting that farken "unmodified content" error - EA you still suck for releasing a bug infested game. I'll certainly think twice when looking at getting your software in the future. Good luck Hirogen - like I say try your brothers ram if his got the same motherboard as yourself. If you still have problems with his ram I would suggest the issue is your mobo. :) :) at last

I can only underline that - I played several hours today on different servers. Tons of mapchanges and 1 time I got banned because of my jets missiles hitting everything but the opponent...

BUT THE "MODIFIED-CONTENT-ERROR" IS HISTORY FOR ME!
