    SAWW Question

I have just started using the Saww, and there are a few things I wanted to ask. I did do a search, but did not find what I am looking for.

    1. When I first fire, sometimes it does not even goto what I have locked on. How can I make sure my first shot goes to the target, even while still locked on? The second shot will track, but first will just go into no where land.

2.Any way to make sure they are going to track beside tone?

    3. How far will they follow?

    4. Sometimes I have fired and went to reload and my shot still hit them, how?

    Thanks.

    1. It should lock on as long as you hear the tone... If the gunship/air transport is flying sideways through your field of vision it's very hard to make it hit though... You could always try to shoot a little ahead of the vehicle you want to take down (as long as you have the lock on tone). Generally it's easiest to just fire when the gunship/air transport is flying towards you or away from you.

    2. No, you can't count on all shots to hit unless it's perfectly still :p

    3. It depends, though it's generally longer than you think. It's easier for the missiles to miss when you fire at longer distances.

    4. They can be a bit weird sometimes. You think "aww it missed" and 10 seconds later I get a kill They can go long distances as I said. The missiles are kinda slow too unless they're really really close to it's victim

I'm not a pro with the SAAW though so people may correct me if I'm wrong.

        1. It is a client side ping issue as told by Dice. After full lock on tone, try to shot later around the same amount of milliseconds of your ping. I do like half second later after full lock on.

        2. Keep your view on the target even if it disappear in the fog/haze.

        3. While locked on/viewing the target: 30 seconds. If you lose the lock on: 3 seconds

        4. As long as you are seeing the target it will hit. Try shooting a target without the lock on view: watch the air vehicle, count to 4 and click. It will track.

Oh snap, good a55 info. I did not know any of that. So if I have a ping of 50, do you think waiting 1 second is good enough?

It's alot easier to get first shot hits if the target is either close and / or moving, but that seems to happen alot to me as well. I've just accepted it as part of the weapon.

2.Any way to make sure they are going to track beside tone?

Even with tone-lock, you still can't be certain the missle will track. Now, if I know I'm just going to SAAW-whore the entire round, I'll turn the auto-reload off, (in the options menu), just to be able to maintain tone-lock longer. Jury's still out on this one.

              3. How far will they follow?

Don't know, really. I've had hit-indicators show up after I"ve reloaded or lost tone, but I can't say how far the gunship went in the interim. Then again, I've had gunships fly in circles around my pos and my missles will lose track.

              4. Sometimes I have fired and went to reload and my shot still hit them, how?

Because they don't track on tone-lock alone. In fact, I'm not all that sure if TL is really necessary after a point.
The SAAW missles tracking mechanism is a little more catch-as-catch-can then I like, but it's still a great toy sometimes. Pesky gunship whores can lose my missles by evasive manuvers, heading for the hardtop and losing them in the ground clutter, flying below my position, (like if I'm up on one of the Suez towers), or flying past some unsuspecting friendly airship. My all time least favorite thing tho is when you get tone-lock and the first missle just does this kinda bloopie thing right towards the ground.

I just feel so inadequate afterwards.

That is the biggest issuse I have so far.

Hey point, what do you mean by this

Should I look at it without the zoom of the Saww? You are saying fire while zoomed in, but no tone, but you can still see what you are shoot at?

That is why I said that after achieving full lock on, try to shoot half second or more later.

No need to zoom (RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON) to start the lock on process.

Once you are watching the target, you are locking him on. That is why when you shoot and reload the SAAW then go back to zoom view, you find the full lock on (your 'eyes' were locking on). Full lock on will break if you lose view (normal or zoomed) for more than 3 seconds.

When you have SAAW in hands, you are locking on airvehicles when you simply look at them even while sprinting.

For me, the zoomed view is only useful when the air vehicle got past the fog/haze or when I need to identify if gunship/air transport is enemy or to scare/find location of airvehicles around my titan when I spawn on hangar.

Oh damn...I didn't even know that! Thanks for the info, Biotech. I guess that explains why I see pilots putting up the shield before I even go into zoomed mode (same thing with the standard AV weapons too, I'm guessing). Now I won't have to fuss around with the horrible scope lag anymore! :yay:

Edit: Oh, and to whomever it was that says they turn auto-reload off, you can actually stymie the reloading process while in zoomed mode even with auto-reload on by just holding down the fire button after you fire your second missile. Although considering what Biotech just said it's really moot now, but just thought I'd mention it. Your soldier won't reload until you release the button.

It seems you can, but you have to keep an eye on the target. Just make sure you are looking at the targeting item. Then you can reload and other cool things.

                            You can't fire and forget.

There are lucky times it works...maybe is a bug. I have fired at a target then turned my back to run and hide due another menace and I saw the 2 kills (pilot and gunner) after a while.

                            I say like 20% chance.

But it could also mean that the gunship could have been 40% damaged before I began to lock on, 1 missile was blocked by the countermeasure shield while it was wearing off and the second missile landed....leaving him with 10 shield points then died after a while from burning down...giving the false illusion of fire and forget when I hit before running away or before the 3 seconds of lock on break up.

That's what I do, just like the stock Engi weapon... goes to reload everytime regardless. Not immediately, mind you, but it still reloads. Just so long as I get to kill Gunship whores, I don't mind!!

And this thread reminds me... has anyone used this as anti-infantry? I"ve read about some players using it with some positive feedback. Tried it when I accidently spawned with it for Titan Defense. Got suprised by an attacker at the entrance to corridor 3, and let loose a missle at his feet. Couldn't stop laughing after it knocked his butt halfway accross the cargo bay.

What an embarassing way to die.
