    A Newbie network question...

I have a friend who lives about six hours away. I am trying to get him interested in 2142, so I am buying a copy and mailing it to him.:) I want to be able to teach him how to play without just dumping him on a server and trying to teach him while dodging bullets. So, my question is...HOW do I set up a network with him that will allow us to play over the internet where it will just be he and I? Is that possible? Even if it is just he and I on an empty map or if we have to play against or with BOT players would be fine. I just want to be able to teach him the basics in a more controlled environment. :)If this is not possible, any alternate suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Heres a suggestion: Use Google instead of making half a dozen newbie question threads. 1 or 2 dont matter, but when you have 4+ from the same guy over the space of a few days, it becomes a bit tedious.

It's possible if you set up a Virtual Private Network but it is much easier to find an empty server and teach him on that.

i dont know of any way except over a lan connection and you would have to be right next to each other.

you could just have him play single player against easy bots at first then tell him to play them at their hardest.

or you can join an empty server but it would most likely be just you two in there with nothing to shoot, although this is how my clan mate taught me to fly. we each went on our own teams and got in the gunships and had a long dogfight training.

          2 things

          1) Yeah, I was a noob. We were all noobs. But imagine if everyone who started playing had to make 10 threads about "newbie questions"

          2) I have seen this before. On these very same forums. I forgot the guys name (started with a D?), but he posted atleast 8 or so threads, all with the same title, with idiotic questions like "How do I unlock things?" and "What are the ranks?", and then he just vanished. I wouldn't be surprised if he never even had the game.

You can try Hamachi. I've only personally tried it once for Civ IV and couldn't get it to work . Best of luck.

Yeah you can try that, don't know if it will work with 2142. Might have a go on their site and see. I know we used it for nsfu 1 and 2 after the servers were pulled.

Dude, no one is making you take the time to reply or even read his threads. He's polite, not arrogant, conceited or stat-obsessed (like 90% of the idiots on this forum :shakehead:), so maybe give him a break :salute:

i agree he soud probably keep all his questions in one thread but dont make him feel like he's already not welcome here. everyday i get somebody on here that makes me feel like they have to be right and in charge. let the guy learn before starting to talk down about anyone

im sorry i wasnt talking about you, i meant in general on this site. i see people do it all the time. ive never seen you do it before and yes that was a good reference. and to tell you the truth i get a little worked up when i see people use the word noob, im tired of that word. like we've said we were all noobs at one time or another. hell i was a noob twice after not playing bf2 for a year and then picking up 2142 a year after it came out.

                        1) Get on teamspeak or ventrillo with your buddy (So you can easily talk while on opposite sides) (Ventrillo has more "bells n' whistles, and *great* sound quality, but is more resouce intensive. In general, TS seems to be more common- sound quality is good enough, and it's simple, with low overhead)
                        2) Log onto empty server.
                        3) Have fun!

                        Piece of cake.

Also, if you happen to find a clan you like with a public TS/Vent channel, you may find a couple of clan guys just screwing around while trying to populate the server. If you tell them you're newbs and seem like decent guys, they may help the training session. (They may also brutally sodomize you if they are jerks, or really bored- don't take it personally! )

(I'd recommend us but my mates have gone back to the past & we only have our BF2 server active at the moment.)

                            Well...
I guess that about sums up my time on this forum. Raider, so sorry to have burdened you with my petty, repetitve and lazy questions. Terribly sorry to have labeled myself as a "noob" which you in fact find insulting. Even more so, I am sorry that I won't be able to ask questions or use this forum as the resourceful potential that it is. I, in fact ,DO own this game. I actually own TWO copies of this game if you count the one I bought for my buddy. My screename, Retrospector, is in fact the name that I use in game. In hindsight, I guess I probably should have just Googled all of my questions...I just thought it would be more interesting to ask real live intelligent people who share the same intrest in this game as I do. I thought I could use this forum to seek information...you know, help. I only asked questions because I simply didn't know. I tried to be as polite as possible and tried to remember to thank everyone. I did not mean to abuse it if indeed that is what I did. I am VERY SORRY to have wasted anyones time out there.
Raider, I own three very successful businesses where I live. I grew up with nothing and I am literally a self made man. I started at what most people would consider below the bottom and worked my way up...took years and years, and I had a lot of help from a lot of great people along the way. Now, I always try to help out those who are in need...because I remember when I was on the bottom and had nothing but questions. I try to help others become successful now...and I try not to fail them. I would never judge someone by their questions simply based on repetitive nature. In the future, perhaps try to be a little more tolerant and suggestive rather than insistive and insensitive. There are some of us who are dieing of a disease that keeps us inside all day. This was a good way for me to spend time...and maybe make a new friend or two. Sorry I failed you...

NOW LOOK WHAT WE DID! i knew you guys would scare him away. dont worry about anyone here nick, its called the internet and everyone has inflated ego's. just try to keep all your questions in the same thread if you could.

everytime someone posts something new in an old thread it goes to the top of the forum

so if you want i would start one more thread "NOOB QUESTIONS" and post all your questions in there and im sure there will be plenty of nice people tell help answer your questions.

try not to be put down by the kind of response you have got so far, not everyone on here is like that

good luck with the game and remember what i said about making one more thread and posting all your questions in there. hell who knows, maybe one of the admins might even make it a sticky(althought i've been waiting for months for another response from them about tis sites glitches DAN GET BACK TO ME, DAN GET BACK TO ME, DAN GET BACK TO ME! DO I HAVE TO WRITE SOMETHING REALLY BAD BEFORE YOU PAY ANY ATTN TO IT AGAIN???) lol sorry about the rant, i just dont understand why they dont respond to people that try to help them out.

i guess they want to take after EA/DICE lol, anywho good luck and feel free to let us know if you have any other "beginner" question

BACK OFF THE NOOB! WE NEED MORE PLAYERS!
