    Back to the basics soldiers!!!!

I'd logged a lot of hours since this game came out (800 hours) and was looking for a new challenge to keep my interest up.

Looking at my main soldier (DeathEngineer) I saw that I'd already played all the maps, all the soldier types, and all the nifty unlocks... but my Assault class was weak. It's always been the weakest part of my game (since I only play FPS you'd think that would be a strength and not a weakness:shakehead:)

So I created (UpgradeLooter) as a new soldier to hone my infantry skills and proceeded on a very slow grind as I gradually learn to play better. After 100 hours of honing my skills on mostly Camp G. I realized that I have really gotten better:yay: and have pretty much reached my max performance. UpgradeLooter as the name implies has only 2 unlocks to start out with (defib and SLB) everything else is looted from dead soldiers on the battlefield (I ended up not looting much of anything since I was doing just fine with the defaults). I did get some kills in walkers and tanks at the beginning but for the most part it was just mano-a-mano with the default assault rifle, pistol, and knife. Once I reached my 'max' potential it was time to start a brand new soldier and so BackToBasic was born:salute:

BackToBasic really reflects my current infantry-only skill level and as you can see from my sig I've come a long way:yay: BackToBasic also has an additional restriction over UpgradeLooter in that NO VEHICLE KILLS whatsoever are allowed; every single 'intentional' kill has to be by default rifle (or the one I was revived with), pistol, and knife... that's it

I now play with the tag [NAKED] to signify that the soldier has no unlocks aside from the defib (should really have been standard equipment) and SLB (it's only fair to the squad to have this when you need it). The challenge for me is to survive on hardcore pub servers such as MIAClan, FMJ, MoonGamers, BandOfBrothers, TacticalGamers, and the likes while keeping my essential stats (spm, K/D, Accuracy) at a decent level (I haven't quite reached my goals yet but progress is still being made:nod:).

Playing this style has these challenges:
    * Can't sprint as far as everyone else
    * Can't recover as fast as everyone else
    * Can't heal as fast as everyone else
    * Can't rack up kills with FRAG, APM, RDX, PK's, or Armor
    * Can't zoom in with the sniper (and no stabilizer either)
    * No extra ammos for the pistols
    * No added 'cushion' with the unlock boots
    * No Netbat (so you just have to rely more on sight, sound, and voice to avoid danger and to relay the dangers to the squad)
    * Lastly noone else is running around [NAKED] (all the FRAG/APM/RDX/PK spammers, cloaked dogtag hunters, zoomed snipers, walkers, FAV, etc... they're all still there to raise hell)

I was quite surprised at what can be accomplished with simply the very basics of what a soldier has and have found a brand new way to enjoy this game (even though I was having a blast playing normally too)

So if any of you have gotten bored keep this in mind as a potential way to breath new life into your battles. I'd still get back to normal gameplay now-n-then but probably not until BackToBasic becomes BG:salute:

Hey, if any of you are 'crazy' enough to do this use [NAKED] as your tag so we can recognize each other on the battlefield:salute:

BTW, I also created a new sig with just the essential stats to track my progress.

Can you elaborate? I didn't get into ETQW so I don't know what the differences are. What makes infantry in 2142 easier?

same thing happens when you stop playing PR and pick up 2142/bf2 only problem is you notice how cheap it is to require 50 zillion bullets to kill one enemy.

Yeah, I know, that's a lot of time but then this is the only game I've been playing and I've definitely gotten my 40 dollar's worth

I'm telling ya... it's a totally different sense of accomplishment when you have a good round playing [NAKED] and end up with something like this on a 48 Camp G

Good job, DeathEngineer! It is rewarding to do it without all the weapon upgrades and tools. I find myself in a very similar situation as you. I'm on my third real soldier (RambRobb) and I can really tell I've gotten much better.

Playing on the BandOfBrothers City Maps server had a huge impact on how well I play as Assault. I'm not a great player, but I'm definately a good player now. Thanks to [gT]VT_Nerd and [gT]El-Gorko who taught me quite a lot.

I'm also working to sustain my KDR increase and keep my accuracy high.
                            Old KDR: 1.26 // New KDR: 1.84
                            Old Accuracy: 15.84% // New Accuracy: 30.49%

                            Keep up the good work!

                              Hey thanks!:salute:

RambRobb is looking good and nice performance increases. When I set out with the re-training I had a goal of 2+ spm,2+ K/D, and 25%+ accuracy. My spm and accuracy is holding pretty steady at my goals but I still have to work on improving my K/D. It is quite a challenge to balance between maintaining a high spm and K/D at the same time isn't it? I mean you can play it really really safe and get a really good K/D... but then your spm suffers. Then on the other hand if you take more risk to maintain a high spm your K/D suffers:wall: Oh well, I guess what would have been the point of setting up a personal challenge if it ends up being easy right?:salute:

You have a major increase in accuracy and you're maintaining it too what did you do differently? or how did you train yourself to be more accurate? I did a couple of things:

                              * Found a better mouse/mousepad combination (G5 mouse with generic settings and RocketFish pad)
                              * Take more time to line up the shots (this is a matter of knowing whether I have enough health to last long enough to line up the shots accurately)
                              * Practice, practice, practice with short bursts and sway-compensation

It took a long time to reach my goals; it's been hard work but most importantly it's been a load of fun too.

As a coincidental side-benefit of starting a new soldier BackToBasic also has a much better W/L than UpgradeLooter... which has a better W/L than DeathEngineer I don't team-switch and the servers I play on surely don't stack the teams. Maybe I've just been on a lucky streak but it's still pretty unexpected.

Hey maybe you should use the same sig I have to show the progress between your 2 soldiers.:salute:

[edit] BTW, I used to play on BandOfBrothers quite a bit and learned a lot there. Unfotunately lately the servers either have been unreachable or are full

As a side note the US military must have used 2142 as a training tool for shooting because according to a recent report... the ratio of bullets fired vs. enemies killed in Iraq was 250,000:1:shakehead:
