"No Internet Connection Detected" at Player login - even though there IS

A great deal of frustration and reinstalls later, I can once again log in and play.

Symptom: Browsers and in-game login can't resolve anything on the gamespy.com network (websites, gameservers, etc.), but all other domains work fine. VPN resolves the website problem, as does an explicit entry in the "hosts" file. DNS problem on my ISP's side, right?

Wrong.

Solution: Cold, hard reset (with the little button) of my router. Apparently, my router had decided it had "had enough" of data traffic to/from the gamespy network and decided not to resolve any of the DNS entries to those networks. Who knew that a piece of equipment like a router could "fail" so selectively, only ignoring a select few DNS entries?

More details of my travails, on the EA support forums. (yes, I was talking to myself apparently)

Figured I'd post here in case anyone else comes up against this problem, maybe they can try what I tried before :wall::wall::wall: too much.

I have to reset my router every now and then to keep playing BF as well. I can tell when it happens since I wont be able to login and will get popups saying that I can't connect to the master server although every other internet based app will function as normal. I have a 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router model number 3CRWDR100A-72. I just login and do a software reset via System Tools/Restart Router/Restart. As soon as the restart is finished and I'm reconnected to the net I can login to BF with no problems.

Do you have internet explorer 7 installed? I once heard that this can cause problems.

It's installed (I think it came with XP SP2, didn't it?), but neither I nor my wife use it (we're a Firefox family). It would really suck if just being installed lets it screw with things, especially since you can't uninstall it like any other app that's not working right.

IE6 comes with XP although you can download IE7 as part of Windows Update. IE7 comes pre-packaged with Windows Vista. I'm on Windows XP SP2 and don't have IE7 installed and never have on this machine.
