How to play a beta and the normal version at the same time.

So, I decided to write this since I often hear stuff like "omg beta sucks i wanna play 1.<insert version number here> too!! Too bad its not possible...

Well, it is! First of all, install the normal bf and patch it to the NORMAL version. Now, open up the Electronic Arts directory. You should see a folder named Battlefield 2142. Select it, and hit CTRL+C. Now hit CTRL + V. You will now (or in 5 minutes, depending on your rig ;P) see two folders: the original one and one called "COpy of Battlefield 2142" or something like that. Now, apply the beta patch, doesn't matter whether it's 1.40 or another, future beta patch. When the patching process is complete, you can play normal version with the copied backup, and you can play the beta version with the original version.

I'm not sure whether I was entirely comprehensible but I guess you guys get the point :)

Well I tried this earlier. I played one map on 1.40 and it crashed at the end of it. No biggie I thought since it's still beta.

Fired up 1.25, played about 4 maps and a crash, slightly unusual. Fired up 1.25 again, crashed twice consecutively as soon as map loaded.

Now, can't even connect to EA master server on either. Not sure if it's a coincidence, or if I've FUBARed it :hmm:

An additional option: Make desktop shortcuts to each of the folders created, and then you just click on the beta shortcut or the prod shortcut. Works like a charm.

And yeah, my hunch is 1.40 will never go live. We'll see another beta first- I will be very curious to hop on and see what the crash rate is like... I would love to know what monster bug they are grappling with. Logically, you wouldn't think the kind of gameplay tweaks they made could have such a devastating effect on server stability. Very confusing, at least to a non-net-code game-developer type.

That's what I did. It was a just a coincidence that the master server went down right after I tried it first.

I still can't play a whole round of 1.40 without the 'There is a problem with your connection' message coming up, then getting booted from the game. When I go to browse servers again, the server I was on disappears until I restart 2142 too.

Yeah, getting a full round out of the beta is a rarity.
