    Which is/was easier

    Edit: Easier, not "eaier"

Going from BF2 to 2142 or from BF2142 back to 2.

Just wondering cause I might get BF2, it's really cheap now and there's almost twice the amount of people playing BF2 right now than 2142.

Going from BF2 to BF2142 is a lot easier than the other way. If you've never played BF2 and your only BF experience is BF2142, prepare to get smoked repeatedly by vehicles (most notably, air vehicles) until you learn the maps better, or just play on maps without them. It's a much sharper learning curve, and a good deal harder to survive as an infantryman than it is in BF2142, which is what prompted the community to ask for an Infantry Only mode.

I think 2142 is easier just based on the fact that you have more awareness with NET-BAT system and infantry and vehicle sonar’s. I get soft playing lots of 2142 then going back to BF2. I constantly feel like I can't keep up w/ enemy movements. But conversely my bro who mostly plays BF2 says he gets owned on 2142, so I guess it is really all a matter of perception. Not really better or worse either way; just differences. There are things I love and hate about both games. Some things they took out of 2142 from BF2 that they should’ve kept and some things that are a welcome departure.

I agree with Rowdy. The amount of nadespam in BF2 is ridiculous. For every PK rocket in BF2142, you'll see 10 grenades in BF2. What's even worse is that you'll never actually hear or see the nades. The nades are small, silent, sneaky little balls of death. You can spam about 4 of them in less then 12 seconds, which results in extreme amounts of the oh so brave nadespam.
Jets( the bf2 gunships, so to say) are overpowered. When you have a noob in the enemy jet you won't notice him, but an expert pilot will rape every single tank, APC, jeep, helo, and jet. AA is useless, by the time you get a lock on, you're either sniped or killed by said jets. I never ever play jet maps anymore simply because of the jets..... BF2142 did a good job on air vs ground balance. When you have an excellent enemy pilot your squad can grab a SAAW and make that pilot disappear. BF2 does not have portable AA; it really, REALLY needs it if you ask me.

However, I find BF2142's map layout a little bit disappointing. Snow, buildings, desert. BF2's maps are much more diverse, with lots of props and other little details that just make some maps shine.

BF2142 has PK rockets. What a shame.

BF2142 has extremely unstable fences. I'd rather take cover behind a fence then behind a wall these days.

One thing that both games share is an overpowered APC. I think that 2142 has the most overpowered one. Those three little glowing tennisballs have ridiculous splash damage..... but the APC in BF2 can take on a tank with a little bit of luck. Both games have an overpowered AR, namely the Krylov/G36E. 2142's balance will be fixed though (<3 1.4).

BF2 has the best expansion pack. I just installed Special Forces again and man it is so much fun! Grappling hooks, zip lines, flash bangs, weird accents (Starlight at my location! :P) and SUPERB maps.

All in all, I think tha 2142 is more focused around squadplay. The game looks a little bitless impressing, but squadplaying in 2142 is easier and much more fun. BF2 is much more about the skills of an individual (jet pilots, helo gunner, APC who- srry, drivers)then about the overal skill of your team.

            What he said ^

            DutchDude put it very well.

Be prepared to be ambushed and snuck up on a lot. Spotting and the UAV are the only tools available for putting enemy dots on the mini-maps. No IDS, recon drone, or little red diamonds in BF2.
To me the maps in BF2 are much better. There's more variety in the buildings. Not a silo or CP surrounded by three "sniper" towers and an apartment building with three halls at the same place each and every time. And, there's even a few buildings you can actually go inside of.
The maps are a lot more expansive too. You can get to almost every area in the in-bounds range, while in 2142 on the infantry maps you seem to be kind of guided to a certain direction. The best way to get a feel for this is to play the infantry version of Suez Canal on a 64 size map. That's how most of the BF2 maps are.

I find that BF2 is tailored to people who practice a lot, whereas 2142 is tailored to the 'casual' player.

No matter how good you are at 2142, there is just so many ways to die that are unavoidable, because of all the different ways to see people on radar. Also, it is so incredibly easy to use the guns in 2142, that even a complete noob can kill a very deadly player occasionally, just from getting lucky.

BF2 however, rewards people who are superior in skill. When I play karkand, I almost always get gold and I finish with about 40 kills and 2 deaths, simply because the only radar is the UAV, and whoever uses it more effectively will always prevail. Typically my only deaths come from artillery.

Well if you call throwing yourself on the ground and starting to spray and pray (because of the stupid deviation of the weapons) whenever you see an enemy a reward for skilled player then you are right lol.

Or because 95% of the player on this map are medics (the highest scoring class in this game). And btw. last time I checked BF2 I could spot the enemy and so could the commander. The only difference is you don't have the NetBat in BF2.

                    You missed the point entirely.

I'll give you an example comparison.

2142 - Camp Gibraltar - Starting from PAC side:

Map starts, both commanders put up UAV. I check UAV and see that there's a ton of guys on the left side, so I go right. UAV wears off. At this point, someone from the other team has put an IDS right near the fence, and there's multiple squad leaders walking around with that recon drone above their head.

Now, every single person on the right side of the map, knows exactly where I am as I try to sneak around to one of those two ladders.

I however, and completely blind, because my team did not put down an IDS, and I'm not in squad.

Chances of survival in this situation? Zero. I will get killed not because the other players are better, but because the game has provided them an incredible advantage.

BF2 - Karkand - Starting from US side:

Both UAV's are put up at the start, and they STAY up for the entire game, with the exception of the 10 seconds in between deploys. Which means neither team has an advantage as far as radar is concerned. At all times, I know where the enemy is, and if I walk into a situation I can't handle, it's my own fault.

As you can see, in 2142 when you die, it's usually because they can see you, but you can't see them.

In BF2, if you die, it's because of your own lack of awareness since there is never any advantage to one side or the other. (assuming both commanders are competent)

Hmm. It's funny, but I've found I do a lot better at the BF2 infantry combat than I used to. But, it might just be the extra practice time, I suppose. The 2142 weapons just seem really innaccurate in comparison.

Like others have said, the vehicles are much more dangerous in BF2. The AA vehicle actually does a nice job vs. the aircraft if you use it right- It should be a lurker, not a charger. Also be aware that if you are in a vehicle or ground emplacement you will show up on a plane's targetting system (but not a chopper's.) So don't just sit around in your vehicle if jets are about- you're just asking for a bomb or missile to obliterate you. I found it can work well to sit next to your AA vehicle, for example, then when you see a good shot, hop in, lock, and fire.

I also agree the SF expansion is a blast. Our clan is actually starting to spend more time on BF2 again, like some others are. BF2's pace is slower, which leaves more room for e-banter on the text thingie, and just b.s.'ing on team-speak, so it also has an "atmosphere" that many find more relaxing.

That may even be true if you're not gettting vehicularly raped every 9.3 seconds.

The thing about BF2 is that the jets and helis can completely dominate a map if used by a good player(s). At least in 2142, infantry have ways to counter the gunships (SAAW, AA guns, etc)... good luck getting a good jet/heli pilot in BF2 with the ground AA or even the AA armor (TV missile = bye bye for you). That was the main imbalance in BF2 that I found.

The game did not provide an advantage unevenly to one side.
That your side (and that includes you) didn't deploy any IDS and OTUS is entirely your own fault, magnified by the fact that you choose to lone wolf, thus depriving yourself of netbat info too.

I will admit that I benefit hugely from the IDS info, but that is a tool available to everybody.
And it can be countered by the Decoy, which will allow you to lay some nice ambushes for those of us who seek out the red dots.

                            bf2 kdr = 1
                            bf2142 kdr = 2.7

ergo, i prefer bf2142 because i get more kills per death. maps/graphics are a little worse, but the overall play is much better in the sequel
