How many here use a trackball instead of a mouse?

Why waste the money on crap? unless thats your price range. Trackball OMG good luck. My money is on the logitech g5 lazer but right now iam using mx518 thinking of moving to g5 but heard xp has issues with it,anyone know about this and are having probs?

I don't know how a trackball would even work on FPS games.

Trackball for work, but mouse for gaming.
I have seen a few people claim that they prefer a trackball, but I just don't get it.
The control is much worse and it feels less intuitive, have you ever tried to draw something using a trackball? I cant even make a straight line.

I used to use a trackball for everything (the style where you roll the ball with your thumb so your first two fingers still click the mouse buttons like normal), including FPS games, thinking that it's be easier to control if you didn't have to slide it all over the place. It worked ok for a while, and I held my own in singleplayer stuff like Half-Life, Max Payne, etc. but just couldn't compete well in multiplayer (BF2142 being my first foray into that world). When I switched out the trackball for a laser adjustable-DPI mouse, my game went through the roof, I couldn't believe the difference it made.

Long story short: don't do it man, stick to a mouse.

But I do still use the same trackball at work - love it and wouldn't want to switch away from it for anything other than gaming.

Do those expensive mouses realy make a difrence, right now im using a stock dell laser mouse I got from work when they were throwing them away. (since our pice of crap comps here still use PS2 conectors)

given that i play games quite alot i don't really see £35 as too much of a sacrifice. the dpi adjustment on the modern gaming mouse is the biggest aid of all, especially when dealing with things like the annoyingly unresponsive rorsch or for when you need precise movements as a sniper.

the g5 is nice and ergonomic, and it looks groovy with my flash-looking shuttle case. i bought it when i got the new pc. if you are going to get your hand lopped off for stealing you might as well steal something worth the penalty :)

Those are the very ones I use (Logitech Trackman) - the older, white model that's larger and flatter is a little hard to find, these days. Glad I've got two for when the one I use gives up the ghost.

Sorry for the noob queston but what doe the DPI have to do with the acuracy and what not. Also what makes the Logitech MX518 so good?

DPI = Dots Per Inch, it is the resolution of the mouse.
The higher this number the more accurate the mouse is.

The advantages of the MX518 is:

• 1600 dpi optical mouse
• Not cordless
• Lots of buttons
• On the fly dpi change, so you can switch mouse speed with the touch of a button on the mouse

And it is just below the $50 mark.
There may be some disagreement about which mouse is the best, but I think most will agree that this is a very good mouse.
