Cant get 2142 to run

I apologise if there is an answer in a thread for this as I did search.

I am new to the forums but have been playing 2142 since it came out.

I recently had a problem with the game freezing half way loading into a map.

A fellow squad member had the same problem and a total reinstall was the only thing that worked. (Now that I have read things here I see there are other solutions)

I did a total reinstall after uninstalling everything except player profiles.

Re loaded the game and played Sat night with no problems

Go camping Sunday, game would not start up. The walker picture with 2142 on it pops up then after about a minute disappears.

So I re applied the patch. The game started up and I played Sunday night.

Monday I tried to start the game. Same problem I encountered before (Walker picture with 2142 pops up but game don't load) So I tried the patch trick again. Nothing.

Tried uninstalling then re installing the game. Started getting disk reading errors that would tell me to start installing the game from the beginning.

I tried all day off and on to install the game. Never got it installed.

Today I got the game to install the first try this morning. Patched it.

Went to play it, and I still get just the walker picture with 2142 on it then it shuts down to windows as before.


Now the whole time I'm working on this, every once and a while after the game start fails I'm getting a message

"Runtime Error!"

I think your harddrive might be dying.
Make a backup of anything important and run checkdisk.

Also consider if other components could be overheating since your computer failed when hot, but worked when allowed to cool for day.

Maybe a silly one as I don't like using it myself, but have you tried using system restore to go back to a date when it was working? Or at least go back to when you had the map getting halfway problems. There is a solution for the map getting halfway that seems to work for most people, which is:

Go into c: program files: electronic arts, bf2142. In there there is a file called radial.cdb. If you cant see it, go to the top of the page and hit tool, then folder options, then view. Then make sure that you change "hidden files and folders" to "show hidden files and folders".
Two lines below that is a line called "hide protected operating system files (reccomended)", make sure that this is no ticked. Then click apply, and you should see the radial.cdb file.
Now right click that file and left click "rename". Rename it to oradial.cdb.
The maps should now load with no problems. For some reason, this file seems to get corrupted.
Why? I don't know, I'm not good enough on these things to tell, but this fix has worked for all my buddies and me as well.

Found the problem. DVD drive not working right. Wont detect disc sometimes
Tried blowing it out, think it might be dieing.

Battlefield 2142 was running until I installed patch 1.40. Now the game fails loading maps at about 60 percent for both SP and MP everytime. The game is unplayable without hacking your game registry files. I should not have to do that to fix a problem they created. That's just asking for trouble. I enjoyed playing the game but now it is worthless. Farewell bf2142. Rest In Pieces.
