    Crashhhh.

I posted my problem in another thread here: http://www.totalbf2142.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=25382

But then I realized that I should probably just post it in a new thread.

    So here's my problem:
I start the game, and once I get to the main menu where you can pick Single/Multi player, and then once you pick one of those, it just crashes and goes back to the desktop. No error message or anything. The game was working fine before I patched it. I wasn't going to get the patch, but I needed it for online.

    System:
    Intel Pentium D 3.2ghz
    nvidia GeForce 7600 GS
    Sound Blaster Audigy SE
    1GB of RAM

Everything has updated drivers, that was the first thing I did when it wasn't working.

Simple fix: Delete your cache--you know the entire BF2142 folder in your My Documents folder. Don't worry, BF will make a new one, but you'll have to remap all your settings and your shaders will optimize again.

Medium fix: Try reinstalling the patch. If it still happens, re-download it and then reinstall the patch. Sometime the installer can get corrupted and won't through out an "I'm broke and won't run!" flag.

Most frustrating fix: Uninstall. Defrag your hard drive (advisable under any circumstances, as this will speed up the time it takes to Optimize Shaders). Reinstall the entire game from scratch (ensuring the cache file is gone, as I sad above). and then reinstall the patch.

Good luck, and if those don't work, search around a little and you might find your answer there.

I've reinstalled the entire thing already.

I'm reinstalling the patch now. Hopefully this works.

One thing I noticed before, the updater just closes at the end, I don't get a message that says anything about it being done. Is this right?

I've noticed that sometimes the updater doesn't respond right away to mouse clicks, and may be still doing something even when it's not apparent... My advice is to give it a couple of minutes and see what happens.

it doesnt respond right away becos dice releases very big patch files that take quite awhile to process. i think mine took like 5mins to start...

I redownloaded and installed the 1.25 update. But it still is crashing at the same point.

Is there anything else I could do?

Just something I thought was interesting: I can access all the options, and the BFHQ, it's when it is searching for servers, or when I go to start a single player game that it crashes.

I'm assuming you mean graphics. They were on high, but I put it down to medium to see if it would make any difference, and the game still crashes.

I've deleted everything in the cache folder several times.

Hmm... Ok, maybe try changing the sound settings? Switch from high quality to low, change the nuber of channels, disable VOIP... I can't recall the patch notes for 1.25 but it may have triggered something that didn't matter before.

You also might be able to see what's "breaking" by looking at your system logs: Start->Programs->Accessories->SystemTools->SystemInformation

then click the tab Tools->DrWatson. See if there is anything in the bottom where it says Application Errors--click a line to highlight it and then click the View button and see if it leads to anything obvious. Or post it up here and we'll take a stab, assuming that there's anything there.

Keep trying, we'll sort this out eventually.

                    Ok.

I changed the audio settings like you said, but it still crashes.
I even tried setting the graphics to low, but still crash.

There wasn't anything in the Application Errors box.

Could it be something to do with the dual-core processor? I read somewhere that that can effect programs that aren't made for dual-core. Just a thought.

                    Thanks for everyones help!

                        oh.

I'm going to try to play it in safe mode later today.

The game didn't even start up in Safe Mode.

Is there a way to play online without the 1.25 patch. Because it seems to be the patch that is causing all the problems.

                        I've made progress!
                        Yay!

I can get it to work if one of my friends on x-fire is playing, and I use x-fire to join them on that server.

But, when it got done loading and I hit the join game button, it said something about reverting to the official version of bf2142, I can't remember exactly what it said, but I'll try to make that error message come back up.

                            That error message said:

This server only allows players with unmodified content to join. Revert your version of Battlefield 2142 to the current official version to join.

I searched the forum for an answer, but none of them worked. Could this error be related to my crashing problem?

I've stopped playing Bf2142 until dice get a fix 4 this problem. Bf2 plays great.
