I know a lot of players dislike using the knife and many players follow an idea of "stick that damn knife away and just shoot him!" But aside from using your knife just to get badges and running away slashing the whole game wasting a space on the server and hurting the team because this persons k/d is so terrible(unless you're timsad) there is upside to using that knife.
I've gotten more skilled with the knife and i've been noticing how much it helps. I usually play assault and constantly find myself rushing into groups of enemies, maybe 3-4. When you're up against 3-4 enemies there's a high chance of dieing unless in the case where maybe you get a noob in one of these 3-4 enemy groups and you have decent cover, you stand a good chance. However, when you aren't confident you will have enough ammo in your gun and pistol and not enough time to reload, the only weapon you have left is that knife. People usually are able to take out 2-3 enemies with a pistol and gun ammo without reloading, so when there is an enemy around the corner coming for you, your best move is to find a spot behind a wall or some kind of cover drawing the enemy toward you, and when he is rounding the area where you are hiding, the knife does the good trick of instant killing without him expecting it.
So i'm sure there are other tatics to use when you are up against a group of enemies (granted, i don't mean all 3-4 enemies firing upon you at one time, but in close proximity), but i think the idea of "knife is bad" isn't always true especially in situations where you have to fall back on your knife.
My Message: Get good with your knife, learn how to use it, it's range and you'll find yourself getting out of those sticky situations sometimes and humiliating your enemy when he thinks he's got you out of ammo.
