    A different (I think) freeze fix that works, so far, for me

    I've posted a couple times about my freezing problem, after doing about a week of trial and error I think I've come across a successful workaround for me. If this was posted already I'm sorry, I've been trying plenty of fixes recently and this set of instructions seems to be new in my mind. My PC's and 2142's problem seems to lay at the feet of PnkbstrB, I've seen many posts about problems with it lately and that's what lead me to my conclusion and my attempt to make this game work for me again. (At this point I'm very cautiously optimistic for this workaround)

    1.) Go to Control Panel---> Administrative Tools ---> Select PnkbstrB---> Right-click and click Start.

    2.) Right-Click on PnkBstrB ---> Click Properties

    3.) Under the "General" Tab find "Startup Type" Drop Down Menu ---> Select Manual

    (Leave the Services Box open)
    (This next step is where experiences may/will begin to differ some)

    4.) Load up BF2142 and select the server of your choice. You may or may not get the "Connection Lost" Message, I have so far each time.

    5.) Re-load the map and it should start without incident.

    6.) Alt-Tab and check the Services Box, PnkbstrB will probably be reset to Automatic. ---> Re-select Manual under the "Startup Type" Drop Down Menu

    7.) Alt-Tab back into the game and play.
    After this PnkbstrB remained in manual until I completely stopped playing and began writing this post. (It disappeared from my Services list after that)

    Now I realize that Alt-Tab is not supported (thanks EA!) and you may crash. If you do crash and can't close BF, use the keyboard to navigate the menus of your Task Manager(Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and find the BF2142Pace.exe Program under the "Processes" Tab. Highlight it, it will have a blue bar over it when selected, and press Alt-E to end the process.

    I crashed once while trying this, ended BFPace and was able to reload BF2142. I left the Services Box open the whole time and PnkBstrB did not reset to Automatic when loading. So far I've played two rounds without a crash *knocks on wood*. I will continue testing this as the evening rolls around and I get some time.

    One more note, It seems that PnkbstrB will sometimes not be visible in the Services box for you to start. When this happens to me I use the pbsvc.exe file from EvenBalance to quickly re-install it. However it might re-load when BF2142 is re-started. If it does actually re-start with 2142 then simply start at step 4 above.

    I can't (nor would I as every PC is different) promise any results, and I'm not sure if this will even last as a working fix on my PC but 2 rounds in a row without even a disconnect is a record for me since these problems started. I wanted to post this and perhaps help someone else. Good luck, and please post your results or extra advice about this workaround if you use it so that we may be able to help out others in the community.
