                      I played around with various combinations because, as Quemical found, the default key combos twist you in a knot. Especially when you are in the thick of it and you're all a**holes and elbows at that point. I have a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 6000 (keyboard/mouse combo) and have settled on the following key combinations:

                      My large thumb button, I use to sprint. I remapped my right mouse button to generate a ctrl+\ combo. Ctrl is still used for crouch and \ I remapped in the Options section of BF2142 to Alt-Fire. This does two important things simultaneously for me. When I hold the right mose button I both crouch and aim. Now, when I come upon a target I can do the two most important moves in one natural stroke. I can also toggle aim and bounce easily which helps thwart a go-for-the-head sniper. I had to remap options for land and air vehicles as well for their Alt-Fire sequences. Works for me!

                        I used to use A,Z,X, Left Shift when i first started fps way back with duke nukem3d. That was a keyboard only game and i used A and Z for jump/crouch shift and x for side step and the arrow keys left/right forward/backwards

                        i used it throughout cs, ut, bf1942, bf:v, q4, whatever. Didn't have so many important keys to bind then. Use mouse and keyboard for those games

                        Then along came the games with had movements like lean left/right or camo rose and I had to learn to use wasd. After that it made playing all kinds of games that had wasd as the default key setting quite easy to quickly get used to. Then along came a new mouse with 2 thumb keys, a mouse wheel that also doubled as a middle button. With grenades and 2 item slots easily bound to on the mouse, I have never been more quicker.

                          I use shift, but I also have it bound to ome of my three side mouse buttons, so if I have to sprint in a hurry I never fumble for shift, I just hit the center page button on my mouse. Works really well.

                          I have the other two bound to medkit and main weapon, and two of the top buttons bound to rockets and defib, for some reason I can't bind the third top mouse button to anything, it keeps thinking its the F9 key or something.

                            Sprint = spacebar - Thumb rests on the sprint key at all times.
                            Crouch = L. Shift
                            Prone = Mouse button 8
                            Jump = Mouse button 7

                              My keys are perfect. I changed nothing.

                              WASD = Ring on "A", Middle on "W", Index on "D"
                              Sprint = Left Shift(Pinky)
                              Jump(Spacebar), Crouch(Left CTRL), and Prone(Z) = Thumb OWNAGE.

                              That's about it for basic movement. I do incredibly well with the setup, but then again I've been using this setup for almost 8 years now.

                              Lastly, Arrow key users sicken me, unless you are left handed. The keys are so far away from other keys. It's just idiotic, and they must be ignorant to WASD controls. Arrow keys are for arcade browser games and typing movement summed up.
