Help With Hammer

I just got Hammer World Editor to make some maps and for some reason it will not allow me to put on textures.
When i make a rectangular prisim just for the floor it shows me the box then when i press enter to finish the box it shows me yellow for the out lines I cant figure out how to put a texture on it.
I hope some one will be able to help me.

Doesn't this editor have a website with FAQs and other info?

What viewmode is that window on? Is it Wireframe?
Try clicking on View -> 3D Textured
