The Deal with CS nowadays

I used to play CS 1.x religiously; for years. However, a couple years ago I stopped playing computer games and went more to consoles and other things in life. Now I'm wanting to get back into counter strike and online leagues. I know that 1.6 is still around and CS Source is the newest addition. Nevertheless, I'am confused as to what is the current lanparty version, 1.6 or source? Where have all the leagues turned too and what should I mainly focus on getting good at again? Or is 1.6 and source backwards compatible as far as skill is concerned? Its been awhile so if anyone has some news I should know; please post it. Thanks guy and happy fragging.

1.6 still rules in Europe. I mean, completely. There are some minor leagues for source...
As for the USA, they've got the CGS, right? Those guys are playing source.
