There have been several threads about this in the past. Why not search for them?
As far as I remember, rate is the speed in KB that you receive data from the server. Most games, including the half-life engine, limit this to 20KB/s. So, if you've got a good connection, rate 20000 is what you want. You'll see many configs that use rate 25000, but the limit is 20000...
cl_updaterate is the number of packets you receive, per second, from the server. Maximum is 100. If you can set this to 100 without choking, excellent.
cl_cmdrate is the number of packets you send, per second, to the server. Usually, setting this at your average or minimum fps is recommended.

Then comes the other stuff, such as the cl_lx (x=c,w) which determines lag compensation. It's pretty obsolete now, but was very used in the cs1.5 days.
ex_interp is the interpolation your computer does of other players. Basically, the lower the value, the more accurately will the models be represented on the server. This means that at 0, you'll see people skipping around, because either they're lagging, or haven't fine tuned their rates. What matters is that now, where you see the models is exactly where they are.

wow i don't really no computer language i don't even know what a packet is.

Based on my computer setup i guess i would set my rates on a 100 tic server to

      cl_updaterate 100
      cl_cmdrate 100
      rate 20000
      ex_interp 0

what about 66 tick would it be

      cl_updaterate 66
      cl_cmdrate 66
      rate 20000
      ex_interp 0 ?

are these the best settings for my computer setup.
please let me know thx again.

Yeah, for a X tic server, set your cl_updaterate to X.
cl_cmdrate should be your average or lowest fps value. This means you'll be sending a packet for each frame (the engine doesn't accept more, only less).
To check out the server ticrate, type sv_maxupdaterate in the console on connection.

Also, many people consider deactivating interpolation as an exploit... But it's really up to you. Most people use decent rates so it won't affect you much, but it's really good to deal with laggers (it's a bit unfair to them, but they should get a better connection or get out).
I use it and don't care what others say. But there are some servers that won't let you use it.

i searched on google for a cal rate auto exec file. I found Caseys cal config

          [link="http://www.trap17.com/index.php/css-cal-config-client_t33097.html"]http://www.trap17.com/index.php/css-cal...t_t33097.html[/link]

rates look like there serious business i even lowered my direct x setting for css cause it said it would help with the performence of the rates.

I don't understand how to do this though

"It is recommended you dedicate half of your system memory. Below is the recommended usage:

          512MB System Memory: -heapsize 262144
          1GB System Memory: -heapsize 524288
          2GB System Memory: -heapsize 1048576"

how do i dedicate half of system memory like it says above. With caseys cal config rates and this combined i should have some great performence.

I thin you just type -heapsize xxxxxx - depending on how much RAM you have.

Some servers don't have motd and some of the players just ignore me when i ask them what are the rates for the server.

Is there a command i can write in console to find out what the

cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate and rate is.

Some one before told me to type in sv_maxupdaterate to find maximum updaterate rate but sometimes the number it gives me is different from the actual server rate when i later find out after askin a thousand times.

SOme of the server rates are at 30000 sometimes and somone also on this server told me the maximum is 25000 so idk anymore.

All i really want out of this is to beable to find out these 3 rates when i enter a server cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate and rate

                  someone has to know thx.

Yes, every server has 2 variables that determine rates.
                    sv_rate and sv_updaterate
sv_updaterate gives you the maximum cl_updaterate you can use, and sv_rate gives you the maximum rate you can use.

okay thx. Just one more question though. when i get the sv_updaterate
that gives me the max cl_updaterate if it says 100 does that mean thats the same value for the cl_cmdrate.

                      would it be then

                      cl_updaterate 100 and
                      (cl_cmdrate 100) ?

No, cl_cmdrate is client side exlusively.
This sets the rate at which you send packets to the server. It should never be above your (average) framerate, because if your pc is working at X fps, then it can't send more than X packets per second. Each packet contains your info for each second.
If you're using voice chat you should set this at highest possible so people don't hear you cracking up. It has other purposes too, just can't remember.

okay now when i have net_graph 3 on the fps meter goes up and down so fast i can never get an exact reading on what the lowest or highest fps is. So i ran the video stress test for css and it gave me the number 180.80 is that my average frame rate you were talking about.

do i now type cl_cmdrate 180.80 in console

                            lol no.
FPS is capped at 100. Higher values are for developer issues only. As such, cl_cmdrate maxes out at 100 too.
So, if your system is constantly running above 100 fps, set cl_cmdrate to 100.
The stress test means nothing. Online play is where you test it.

Even if the fps value fluctuates a lot, you can always see more or less which is its lowest average value, and setting cl_cmdrate to that is pretty much enough.
