Article: NowGamer Multi-Player Preview (8/9 maps) of Battlefield 3

This NowGamer preview has overview's of all of the maps except for Kharg Island. It's an interesting read if you want to know how each map plays: http://www.nowgamer.com/features/108...map_guide.html

I'll pick out the highlights if you don't want to read :)

    Caspian Border

Chances are if you’re a PC gamer, then you’ve already played this sprawling map to death. It’s quite simply one of the biggest multiplayer maps we’ve ever played in an FPS, or any genre for that matter. It also has jets, which instantly makes it awesome...It’s huge, and it really does feel like you’re fighting a war on two fronts, although Capsian Border definitely underlines the need for 64-player matches on consoles.
    Grand Bazaar

This Middle Eastern market is one of Battlefield 3’s smaller maps, and we played it in both Rush and Team Deathmatch modes. The tight streets, and surrounding apartment buildings smack of an attempt to emulate Call of Duty. When you think Battlefield, you definitely don’t think of environments like this...As a Team Deathmatch map, Grand Bazaar feels weak compared to almost any Call of Duty map, but in Rush mode it feels like a real step up for the Battlefield series. Just remember to be wary of snipers to avoid being picked off unexpectedly.
    Op. Firestorm

Possibly a contender for best map in the game, Operation Firestorm takes place in the blazing heat of a burning desert oil field, leading up to a petroleum warehouse at the top of a sun bleached hill.Operation Firestorm is one of those sweet maps that reward teamwork, and demands a strong mix of classes. The thrill of running between Conquest points as jets duke it out overhead is exhilarating, and delivers a consistent pace throughout each match.
    Op. Metro

Destruction-wise, it’s incredibly underwhelming, and is by far one of the least impressive maps on the disc.
    Tehran Highway

This is one of those great Battlefield maps that reward whichever team manages to hold a tank longest, as it can be used to patrol the streets and blast any stray troops running around...Tehran Highway is a constant cat and mouse game between troops on the ground, snipers up high and that bloody tank. Just make sure you either get to the tank first, or use RPG rounds to see it packing as soon as possible. It’s simply another great tactical map
    Noshahr Canals

It’s not a bad map as such, but it’s far removed from the wide-open spaces and grand scale encounters the Battlefield series is known for. Just be careful not to swim around for too long, or you’ll sink like a rock and look really foolish. Not that we did that at any point of course.
    Damavand Peak

Damavand Peak is a masterclass in map design, so it’s a bloody shame that too few of Battlefield 3’s environments can match the scope, enjoyment and intensity of what’s on offer here. We can already see this becoming a true fan favourite once the game launches.
    Seine Crossing

With a lack of vehicles, this feels like another wasted chance from DICE. The scope and true ‘warfare’ vibe of the series feels lost on this map, and you really do pine for something bigger and more inspiring. That’s not to say the developer won’t be expanded for other modes by way of DLC, but for now, it feels all too familiar.
In summary, they basically think Op. Firestorm, Caspian, and Damavand are amazing maps, but the others pale in comparison. They were also somewhat positive with Grand Bazaar, Tehran, and Noshahr.

Nothing like a bit of light reading in the morning.

The most entertaining part of that site is the Comments. LOL.

The thing that I wonder though is have they played all the maps on all the game modes? Because for something like Operation metro, there has been footage from the start of APCs blowing up the sides of buildings, rolling around various areas that were of course not in the rush mode. It also sounds like they were playing on a PS3, if so even the conquest maps wouldn't be at their fullest.

Yeah, I wish they clarified that more on what they were playing and with console or PC. I dont think it really matters though as it does seem that DICE Is going for a large, medium, small type of map size setup.

I wish they could have shown where flag placement was as well. There is a lot they could have really covered that would have answered better questions.

        Good find Anarchy! +rep.

They were playing on the PS3. They mentioned it in the Caspian section and they talked a couple of times about some maps having 3 flags, which are the console sized maps.

Remember the footage with the APCs came from the E3 videos, which predated the alpha. There was an APC in the alpha as shown in those videos. It was taken out due to "complaints" apparently. Not sure if we will see it on the conquest version though.

Yup I remember the APC well, used it a lot in the alpha. It was only useable in the first section, which was all park, you could see the streets and buildings but were never as close as you were in the E3 footage. Plus think about Operation metro, lets say first mid sized Conquest, on PC 32 players, they might just have all the parts of the rush maps, or just 2 sections, like we've seen with Conquest maps in Bad company 2. However 64 player conquest would have to include a lot more then even all the sections of the rush version, most likely the streets on top of the tunnel, which we can see at the 1st section of the map, and the last 4th section of the map. That's where I think that footage might be from, the streets of Op.Metro or Siene river, at least if that's not single player footage.

So only three of what we would call BF maps?
This reminds me of the MoH failure.

Re: Article: NowGamer Multi-Player Preview (8/9 maps) of Battlefield 3

MoH had a lot more problems than maps.

With these maps, tweets about this not being available on release and that not being available on release, the co-op map count dropping from 10 to 6, and so on; I feel like something disasterous happened in the background and they had to fix it before they could move forward with finishing stuff and are now cutting things out.

Maybe its nothing, but they have been working on BF3 for quite some time with a very large staff for all this to be going on.

Dont get me wrong, I think the game is going to be great and fun, much much better than BC2 (which I loved playing), but all this stuff just doesnt add up.

Everything just smells of the game being rushed more than I assumed.

It seems like alot of the maps are built around Rush....I wonder how some of them will play on conquest...

as a big fan of conquest, i am dissapointed in hearing about the small city maps. i do see that they tried to copy arica harbor, oasis, atacama, and maybe rolling thunder from bc2. i was really hoping they would add a map like laguna presa or laguna alta... dont forget about the karkand expansion guys! we can still have wake island!

Absolutely, but I was thinking about how they had only 8 maps, and 3 were exclusive to one game mode which could not be played on the remaining 5.
So if you had one preferred game mode you stayed with, you would only have 5 or even 3 maps available.

It looks like fans of large scale vehicle warfare only will have 3 maps in BF3. Thats not good.

This is what i was worried about , maybe the 4 BF2 maps will help some what.

If this game was open to mods, which it wont be it could bring on some awesome mods IMO.

Yeah, I agree. The map scene is seeming a little sparse for those that like that. Granted as soon as everyone figures out the Karkand/Gibraltar map, thats the only one going to be played anyway, but it would still be nice to see some different things.

Yeah Rambo, I think that will help a lot as well. Not sure how the free DLC will pan out for the servers though. You know how DLC gets with Battlefield.

Although I thought Caspian Border was a relatively good size for a 64 player map, I still found that quote quite amusing.
