DICE, Have you Forgotten Integrated Teamwork?

What made the Battlefield series GREAT was the features that other First Person Shooters (FPS) did not and still do not possess. The innovative pillar that elevated Battlefield above the rest was integrated teamwork.

Other video games have taken a large group of people and created an entertaining environment. Battlefield brought together 64 strangers, formed an organized structure to what would otherwise be a chaotic mob, evolved the gaming industry, and created another whole level of FUN.

Now instead of players just looking out for themselves, DICE created the conditions to encourage cooperation. They gave online players the tools and incentives to unite as a functioning team. Players volunteered to be an integral part of a structured group which succeeded with the concept of division of labor. Their specialized role allowed their small groups to unite under of the banner of a cohesive team to experience synergy. That’s right, all of the individuals produced a result that would not have been obtainable by any of them independently.

DICE introduced the lessons learned from centuries of warfare to online gaming. The Roman Legions of ancient times consistently defeated less organized adversaries. They united as a team using the combined arms approach to warfare.

Military organizations need a Leader. Someone must be in-charge. There has to be a unity of command. The commander establishes objectives to be accomplished by the collective group. Ask yourself, “How many professional sports teams do NOT have a coach?”

DICE broke new ground by putting in place systems that created a positive social atmosphere. They changed online gaming behavior. Here is their winning line-up:

Commander – Lead the team, Intelligence, Logistics support
Squad Leader – Lead the squad, mobile spawn, coordinate with team lead
Assault – Primary killer, organic indirect fire
    Anti-Tank – Destroy vehicles
    Spec Ops – Destroy equipment
Sniper – Long range killing, surveillance
Engineer – Repair, counter vehicular mobility
    Medic – Restore health
Support – Ammo resupply, suppressive fire

With the following modern military branches represented:
    Infantry
    Armor
    Artillery
    Air Defense
    Aviation
    Special Forces

And on a small scale (or represented function):
    Medical
    Transportation
    Engineer
    Ordinance
Signal (Commo Rose & Functioning VoIP)

So, why are Battlefield Veterans up-in-arms about the limited information that has been made public reference Battlefield 3 (BF3)?

First, because they care about the future of the Battlefield series.

Second, because of the disturbing information that has been released by DICE. Here is a brief summary of what was stated by the DICE representative to the GameInformer magazine (FEB 2011) reference the Commander mode:

“… giving the power back to the players so everyone could use it... We lowered the threshold for everyone because we gave it to everyone. We now know where the boundaries are for keeping the strategic depth and complexity while lowering the threshold to get in.”

Battlefield fans want the series to progress and not revert into pandemonium commonly known in other FPS video games.

The remaining portion of this message may come across as a little corny, but none the less,… on target. The 1991 film “Hook” starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. The main character Peter Banning forgets he is, in fact, Peter Pan and must be forced to remember his past. I order to truly recall his personal history he must discover his “happy thought.”

The leadership at DICE should make their employees play the Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 games. There are many indications that they have forgotten the unprecedented gameplay.

DICE, for the sake of the Battlefield series, you must commit to memory your “happy thought.” DICE remember your “happy thought” is – Integrated Teamwork.

Re: DICE, Have you Forgotten Integrated Teamwork?

Instead of a exact replica of the BF2 Commander, could you imagine a version of the position where the commander issues a plan and leads his team to victory.

The BF2 commander assets empower the commander to reinforce success on the battlefield and to reward cooperative squads. BF2142 rewarded squads that followed order by giving extra points. I believe a cookie-cut of the BF2 position would not be the best course of action (COA). A modified version would be much better than removing the position all-together. There really should be at least one person looking at the big picture of friendly and enemy activity and directing friendly forces to exploit success or exploit a perceived enemy weakness.

On of the biggest complaints about the BF2 commander position was the "Enemy Spotted" audio/text repetition. That very small technical issue could easily be fixed. That alone would fix 70% of the BF2 commander haters.

Every "Spot" should be earned. There should Not be a scan feature, 3x commander zoom, or the commander ability to click on the map to spot. The spotting should be done by soldiers in the field, snipers, and a separate UAV operator.

Battlefield 2 (BF2) and Battlefield 2142 integrated Real Time Strategy (RTS) game play into a First Person Shooter (FPS). I have talked to several RTS gamers that came over to FPS because of BF2.

Only the squad leaders having BF2-like commander features and removing the commander could work, but would not be as good as having a single player calling-the-shots for the whole team.

I am getting a stinking suspicion that DICE never realized what they had created using “integrated teamwork.” Clearly, they do not realize they discovered “GOLD,” and just kept on digging.

Wake UP!!! DICE, you incorporated Real Time Strategy (RTS) characteristics into a First Person Shooter (FPS). Surely, someone told you guys the amazing thing you produced.

Evidently, you are going to lower your head with your arms hanging at your sides and return to a plain-old FPS game. Shame on you, DICE.

Since the GameInformer article became public knowledge, there have been over 20,000 views of a thread in the EA UK Forum titled "Commander Yes or No." If you are a fan of the Battlefield series, please take the time to review the "Commander Yes or No" topic and cast YOUR vote.
        .

        .
We are looking forward to reaching the 100,000 view mark. Maybe, we can bark loud enough to really be heard by DICE decision makers.

Christ Almighty! (no existence of actual deities implied)
At least try the game before you declare that the world is coming to an end.

I predict that this will make zero difference to the large majority of players. And views does not equal votes, only 6% of those even caring enough to view the thread has voted in favour of a commander.

Also, did you just return to TGN to spam copies of your old threads from EA forums, without ever bothering to respond to any of them?

It is a shame how civilized cultures have degraded into a state of apathy. It is way too much effort for folks to vote, so a better measure of “interest” for a topic would be the views.

I will bet if I analyzed your 6,141 posts in the TGN Forums, I would find many of them to be negative. Try to be constructive. It may be better received.

I think it tells a lot of the importance of the subject, if people cant be bothered to vote.

Now don't get me wrong, I love debate. But I don't like people who paste in huge blocks of text from other forums, and then leave.
If you intend to stay with these two thread that you have created today, then you are very welcome. :)

Ha, the advantage of a home field: Local support

But I feel I owe you a bit of constructive criticism, so: This system and your fire support team belong in a milsim, not in a arcade shooter like BF.
Even the very basic squad framework in BF2 and BF2142 was underutilized.
The solution to this is KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) that makes it easy and intuitive to join a squad and play as a team. Not making it even more complicated, scaring away the beginner.

I should think that most of what you describe can be achieved anyway by a Clan on VOIP. For the rest it is simply overkill.

Yea I remember going through this before. I love the irony of the whole "this generation is killing video games!!!111" argument. THEY'RE VIDEO GAMES MAN, GO AND PLAY OUTSIDE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM.

I mean I enjoy more skillful, teamwork oriented games myself but its just a freaking video game. Put effort into something that actually matters and not your pseudo life. When you people play games its less about fun and more about ... damn I don't even know.

And like Vreki said if you really want all that, go play Arma or something...

Apparently the majority of the posters here doesn't share your vision of the future of Battlefield. There is nothing more to it.

Like someone said on the EA forum, we should be looking more for Red Orchestra 2 if we want more teamwork (there will be commander+squads+mods). Dice want to keep their games simple and accessible, not make a PR bis.

I just skimmed your posts, but I know for a fact that they're are just full of crap complaining about how BF3 isn't going to be anything like the ultimate glory that was BF2. The whole community of BF veterans isn't up in arms about BF3, believe it or not. Maybe you should actually take into account the percentage of people who bought BF2, 2142, or BC2 in comparison with the number of people throwing fits about BF3 not being an exact duplicate of BC2.

And Vreki isn't just a nattering nabob of negativity. He's one of the most welcoming and helpful posters on this forum. Don't blame him for your worthless posts not being well received.

Anyway, get a life; it's just a game, dude. You seem to be taking this so seriously, as if it really makes a big difference in your life. That's obsession. Go outside, do something with friends face to face, not in front of a computer.
