  • How Treyarch Plan To Defeat Pre-owned Games

Treyarch plans to defeat the troubles of pre-owned games by making a good game as well as keeping multiplayer free.

When speaking to MCV » Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia talked about how they can defeat the troubles of pre-owned games.

When customers trade in video games it causes a few problems for the publishers and developers. Companies such as EA and THQ have recently began taking steps to help combat this by offering a one-time download code for those who purchase new copies of the game. The codes often include exclusive content to download and even unlocks Multiplayer, forcing those who buy pre-owned copies to pay extra in order for it to unlock.

We reported » a few months ago that Treyarch were aware of the problems that second-hand games cause and that although they weren't following the same route as EA and THQ, their plans did interest them.

But in the latest interview with MCV Lamia believes that quality is a more effective deterrent that one-time download codes. He wants to take it in "the other direction" in order to bring consumers "really great reasons to keep their games" instead of trading them in.

As Lamia also mentions, multiplayer is the vital area in Call of Duty games. It's this mode that sees thousands of players playing every day for weeks, months and years to come. That's what Treyarch intend to continue supporting the game for a very long time after release. They're going to "support the hell" out of the game and will do their best to keep the gamers engaged, hence resulting in them keeping and playing the game rather than wanting to trade it in.

And for those that believe you will still have to pay for multiplayer in Black Ops, he concluded by saying that they won't use any tactic to restrict multiplayer. This applies to both new and second-hand games. Why? Well
"multiplayer comes with the game you buy"
    , therefore
"you don't have to do anything else for that"
    .

I think the fact they are using Steam on the PC is pretty good at fighting pre-owned, donno about consoles though.
