i've been master sergent for an age. any idea why i'm not getting promoted?

You are not yet eligible for the advanced rank of Sergeant Major because you are missing the awards: Basic Aviator Badge.

you can't get to Master Gunnery Sergeant because you don't have enough points (need like 6000 more)

you can't get to Sergeant Major because you don't have enough points (need 6000 more) AND you need the basic aviator badge.

you can't get to First Sergeant because at the time when you were promoted to Master Sergeant, you didn't have all the proper badges needed to get to First Sergeant. and because of that, you won't ever get to First Sergeant. you're just stuck on master sergeant until u get to the 50,000 points mark. this also goes for the Sergeant Major vs Master Gunnery Sergeant. when it comes to time for ur promotion, you cant only get MGS or Sergeant Major...and if you don't have the required badges, then you'll be stuck on master gunnery sergeant and you can't get to Sergeant Major
