    Yeah, those make good times

In the first Shogun, I thought the AI was pretty good. I remember a few times my army and the AI army did a mad sprint to the high ground. It threw me entirely off guard because all the other RTS games the enemy just throws itself at you.

Needless to say they made it there first and it was a long and costly battle because of it

it requires a lot of strategic thought

in the newer games the AI isn't so good, so tactics aren't all that important, in Empire for example its typically hard to get a good battle UNLESS you use something like Darthmod and use the recommended difficulty settings, then you have to think

Rome and MTW2 all have mods that make them very challenging and give the AI some brains

from there you not only have to manage your military ability but your own empire on a large scale which of course in turn decides what kind of military power you get

I guess its great because its not just about beating someone with military power, economics, diplomacy, espionage or just bribe the son of a *****, you can do some calculated stuff that is awesome when it pays off

and funnily enough just as awesome when it goes tits up lol

like trying to play off my rivals, a European and Indian empire only to have them be friends (Empire), or accidentally pissing off the Romans in RTW

Well, its sorta the same, but not.

The battles are real time, like Dune and C&C, but the development of your kingdom and armies are turned based. So it would be like C&C where you build your bases and men in turn and then when you built up as much as you can before attacking/defending, what forces you have in that area are put on the battlefield to fight.

Yeah, this one and its expansion pack will be my last TW. I only played Shogun MW1 then went to Empire. That gave me Rome for free. None of them were as good as Shogun though and this one is making that with Empire graphics and engine enhancements, so that will be nice.

I really really really hope they make the AI a lot smarter all around. It sounds like they are. I hated it when an enemy would not accept a truce even though they are down to their final province, besieged, and all buildings captured. Thats stupid not to accept those terms. I know some rulers would be irrational and refuse to, but not all of them.

    Re: Shogun Total War 2!

    My main 'problem' is I am getting so much more game time out of mods for M2tw than any of the new ones. Empire and Nappy were just a quick breeze in the campaign, with marginally improved AI than M2tw (Empires was actually worse imo) and a few new unfinished features. For example;

. Tech tree - Had little impact to no impact on the campaign or faction at all and really has a lot of potential.
. Navel battles - Nice start but there were a lot of dynamics left out

And that is pretty much it? I cant really think of anything these games have done better than previous titles. I am just getting kind of bored of shelling out £30 for the same game with new units.

M2 mods just give so much more depth and endless re-playability.

Also, the MP in Empire and Nappy sucked balls. I mean seriously, they seem to just not develop it at all. You can have 2 players with medium unit sizes and nothing more before it lags to hell, thats if you can connect.

It seems to me that CA does not really want to try anything that is really going to shake their game up, be it for the better or the worse so they just progressively keep remaking the same base game with very minor improvements. Its such a niche market that they have, I am not sure trying to streamline their games will really help them sell more units at all.

But I dont know, I will probably end up buying it and getting through the campaign, find I cant connect to anyone in MP, find that modding support is pretty much dead and never play it again.

:rawr: BLASPHEMER! Its been 10 years!

But I understand as well. I dont blame you for wanting to wait. I think they made this one a lot more complex than the others, but may not be as the original.

Good find. They are adding a lot more to Shogun 2. I like the tech trees on the generals and spies. That will give them a lot more value to the game than before. You can also better manipulate how well your army does in a situation. Before you coudl have a weak general controlling the high ground and pretty much be able to hold it, but maybe with these types of changes it wont be the same.

Check out this link from the Shogun 2 forums for a bunch of video's regarding the game (http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...-videos-thread) and also I found one video that really shows shogun 2 in a lot more detail than many others showing battle and campaign map. Here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=q63Jeou20AQ) the first part is a bit dry but he goes into the game, if i remember correctly, more towards the middle of the video.

TW poops all over them! more tech for adults and a level of realism with real battles settings and history elements
