TBQH, i am still recommending CoH, now i would also add generals and RA series but they are outdated as per your post and RA3 (red alert 3) just ruins the series. Anyways CoH is defo cheap by now if you are in England i know the price is 17 pounds for the whole trilogy. here are some vids:
Thanks for the link but the game looks just terrible, even if it had the best rts gameplay in the world I wouldn't play it. Not meaning any offence to you just my opinion :)
It was originally released over 10 years ago.
But it's worth a try, it's free so it's not like you have anything to lose.
Any shouts for World In Conflict, it's not much an offline game really although the campaign is good, it won't keep you entertained for that long. The online is (or was when I last played it) extremely addictive, check out the demo. I'd say it definitely fits into your easy to play, hard to master request.
CoH is worth a shout as well, though it didnt hold me for that long as others have said the mod community is quite big for it.
hmm, mine will mostly be older, good RTS games are hard to come by these days, I mostly play Total War for strategy, but ofc I still have mah older titles
Homeworld 1 and 2 - simply two of the best RTS games ever made and the MOST BEAUTIFUL
Total Annihilation - the best RTS game ever made
Supreme Commander - spiritual successor to TA, great game and can be very challenging against the right player, its all about the Forged Alliance add on though which improved a lot of stuff
I would add Starcraft and Starcraft 2, two great games, I never really got into them that much (which is strange) but they are good games with a huge amount of thought and micromanagement put into them lol, just be prepared to get mooooowwwweedd in MP
I would mention stuff like Age of Empires 2, but I doubt you would be into that
If you want a fun single player RTS go for Dawn of War. I still love that game. Its a pretty simple game too. You can get all the expansions together for pretty cheap to by now.
Sins of a Solar Empire is also a really great RTS. I thoroughly enjoy it, although there's a tech tree element to it. I suggest also giving that a looksee.
