I ended up coming across a lot of friends I played BF2 with and had a blast. Mind you there were a lot of grievers online just causing headaches and pain (cursing, racists and TKing), but a simple leaving and finding a new game wasn't much of an issue. Because of the number of people online there wasn't a shortage of variety of playing styles you could come across.
