How do I use C4?

This is probably a stupid question, but whenever I try to use C4 by pressing the 5 key, all it does is to give me the hand-held control and display a white target symbol. I was under the impression that it was supposed to throw the
C4 packet and then ignite it when I pressed the control. I use the fire button and the hand shows it is pressing the
control, but nothing happens. There are plenty of times I would like to use C4 and I can't. Any suggestions?

Left click (secondary fire) to throw, right click to detonate.

This is the MW2 forum so I'm guessing that you're talking about using it in MW2. In MW2 press your key ( G and MiddleMouse by default) for grenades to throw and primary fire (LeftClick by default) to detonate. I haven't tried it but I think you can double tap your use key to detonate the C4 just like in CoD4.
