Ranking up weapons

Good afternoon everyone, quick question.

When you rank up a weapon, does the weapons stats increase, such as accuracy. Or are the rank ups simply used for weapon upgrades?

Rank ups are simply for points gained by bronze, silver, and the unlimited gold stars that you can receive.
