Honestly the whole demoman/soldier friends thing kinda leads one to believe that eventually the demoman will have the item as well

I agree, you'd think Valve would give the losing class the item so the classes can balance out.

Its so much easier to sticky jump with Demoman then it is with Soldier rockets IMO. I learned to sticky jump with demoman way before I could do it, well with soldier, or pyro.

I got the equalizer, it is EXCELLENT. I play the soldier much more now.

It's a random drop, but you can also get it through crafting. Can't be arsed to explain everything but you find how to craft gunboats a bit further down the list, doesn't take ages but you need to stock up on some extra weapons.
