Looks like ISPs are getting involved with MW2...

I spend a fair share of time browsing the internet while at work and these kind of stories about MW2 just keep popping up.

Turns out, Comcast contacted me and they threatened to suspend my account, I told them over the phone what is going on and they managed to believe me and made a note on my account.

This looks like fun times ahead, especially with 402 announcing a big update in the coming weeks. Lets hope that's dedi. servers so they don't get to many of their clients in trouble.

I think its to do with an ISP getting pissy that they are using way too much usage, this being due to the fact that games for MW2 are host provided therefore using the hosts internet bandwidth usage, and in this case the ISP are not happy about it.

Yeah, if you read the post linked in the OP, you will see that the ISP explicity forbids hosting a server.
I think most will take that to mean a dedicated server, but you never know.

But one question that also have been raised is: Why have we never heard about this issue with regards to consoles? They have been doing P2P for years.

Its because most ISP nows give the online feature of the consoles as part of their freezone usage. So even though they are running a P2P it goes straight on the freezone for the ISP, much like ITunes, Youtube etc.

I know my ISP has freezone for Xbox Live, ITunes, Youtube and one other site of my choice.

We don't have a concept like that here in the US.

However, I would imagine the communication protocols for the XBox and the PC look markedly different; I'm sure Comcast and whoever else can determine the difference between game console traffic and other traffic if they look at it (I'd put money on them filtering that traffic out of reports).

Didnt realize it didnt operate that way in the US, so i would also agree with webs as to the fact they must have a way of filtering the traffic between consoles and PC.

I bet it is just as easy as them filtering out packages heading for an IP that belongs to XBox live. As far as I know, the Xbox/PS3 use the same protocols as the PC so I don't see why ISP's wouldn't be able to put IWNet's servers as a freezone.

huh funny you guys mention this but i was playing on monday and then one match i lagg out hard and then im not able to even connect to the internet at all for about an hour
