ATI 4870 with BF2142

Hi.

Is anyone here using an ATI 4870 with BF2142?

If so, what version of the ATI catalyst drivers do you use, and how stable have you found them to be?

I'm going to be installing my HIS 1gb ATI 4870 card in a new machine soon, and I'm umming and arring about whether to get the latest drivers, or to go for old (more stable?) ones instead.

A 4870 is pretty much overkill in every conceivable settings for BF2142.

I have a 4870 hd shapphire, and I got the latest drivers from catalyst CC few months ago and every thing works fine.

I have a 4870 , just install the latest drivers, the game is a peace of cake for this card.

I didn't imagine that the game would tax the card in any way ...I just wondered how stable the latest drivers were.

From your responses, I now feel confident using the latest ones.

OK, well, my older slower machine will take the latest drivers, although my new fast machine throws a wobbly and even restarts mid-install! :O

So, I've gone with version 9.1 instead of 9.11 (i.e. from ten months earlier) and that seems fine.

I'm using XP, and the additional features brought in with drivers after 9.1 seem to be mainly concerned with Vista/Windows 7 compatibility anyway.

Not for playing Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 it isn't.

Those games were written for XP, and are not officially even supported under Windows 7 or Vista.

Also, plenty of people I know have had punkbuster issues which have turned out to be because they've got Windows 7, so they've had to use workarounds.

That was with Windows 7 beta... Windows 7 RC had this fixed and the Retail Version works like a charm.

BF works just fine on vista/win7. I have 4870, I used 9.10 on 2142 with no problems.

Patch 1.5 has added full Windows 7 support and Punkbuster now officially supports it as well.

There are no issues any more and it's common knowledge that Windows 7 is a faster gaming platform :)

When I installed latest drivers for my 5770 it was supposed to restart while installing... just an FYI
