  • Really???

Perhaps these are just the utterings of an enraged idiot but none the less enraged I am. I had been wanting to try out some COOP on MW2, of course it would not let me as I have a commerical grade firewall on my network. Unlike any game I have previously dealt with, it does not want you to simply open a few ports to play but drop all of your protection.

    Direct from www.infinityward.com/nat

Log into your router and turn on UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), most routers have this option in the Administration tab.

The goal is to have an OPEN NAT in order to host Spec Ops games and get a wider selection of MP matches to join.

For more information on enabling UPnP on your router, visit your router manufacturer's website. A few of the most popular router web sites are listed below:

    •Linksys: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/support
    •Netgear: http://kb.netgear.com/app/
    •D-Link: http://www.dlink.com/support/
    •Belkin: http://en-us-support.belkin.com/
If you ask me this can only be one of two things, either A) the developers feel that the average gamer does not posses the proper level of intelligence to open ports on their router or B) the developers were just too damn lazy to make the game more secure...of course I am leaning towards B regardless of my personal opinion of average intellect in electronic gaming. Looks like there will be no COOP for this COD noob:shakehead:

    Re: Really???

Wasn't this in the NEWS section the first day of release? This isn't the only game that does this, Borderlands is also guilty of the same crime. I don't know if the patch that was released last week also addressed this issue.

      Re: Really???

Turning on UPnP did nothing for me. What worked for me was opening the ports:
      1500
      3005
      3101
      28960
(I put them on "both" but I would guess it is UDP)

      Try that.

        Re: Really???

Just to make it clear: Open NAT doesnt mean that you have to open everyting, its just the status code that MW2 returns depending on you setting (or the number of sunspots more likely)
Mine shows "Strict NAT", but so far I havent had any problems. That may come when I try coop.

But it really is a mess. I like to think I have above average knowledge of this stuff, but I cant get my NAT to open even when I try.
I was able to host Coop in COD:Waw so I hope it is still working, but who knows.

The more ports you open, the more vulnerable your system is. UPnP is known to have vulnerabilities, hence most people turn it off. I was talking to some tween playing this game complaining about the game still showing strict after he turned of all his network engineer Dad's firewalls on is enterprise class networking equipment at home. I hate to know what he has on his home network where his son just disabled all his security without permission, mind you I haven't seen him on the web since. Yeah, this is going to happen more and more if games are going to require more and more holes to contact the outside world.

EDIT: Talked to a friend and these are all streaming ports.
