  • help with possible hardware upgrade

this is what i have now:

    core2duo E8500@ 3.6ghz
    radeon 4870 512mb
    6gbRAM
    320gb 7200rpm hdd
    vista x64

the game gets crazy chop-ness when looking at smoke stuff and panoramic type views.

im guessing that i should just fork out some cash for another video card? or is there something more efficient i can do to make the game run better on the graphics it defaulted at?

Something else is going on. Your settings are fine the way they are.

You might try turning Alias off, if its not already. Maybe also shut down some programs and see if it improves. Even antivirus, just to test. Be sure you checkdisk and defragged your hard drive. Also on Steam you can make sure the files are not fragmented by right clicking on the game. Give that a go.

Re: help with possible hardware upgrade

there's been reports of performance problems with 4870's. (though not everyone with 4870)
      here's an example: http://forums.amd.com/game/messagevi...hreadid=121950
and i've seen other forums that people experience this.

and i think most of us suffer slowdowns with the smoke grenades. it's been that way in almost every fps game that has smoke nades.

Stay with what you have now there is no reason for you to upgrade, your rig will run games for the coming year just fine.

Side note....make sure you don't have "vertical sync" on....this will EAT YOU UP!

::EDIT:: try turning off your "soften smoke edges" option as well.
