  • Much Easier for Casual Gamers, Right?

While some of us have no problems configuring our routers to host listen servers, or torrents for that matter, it's seems their intended audience may not be quite as savvy. I mean, they're all too stupid to sort a browser and click on a server with a low ping, right?

They don't even give you instructions. They just link you to the manufacturers websites.

Not only that, but the links to the manufacturers websites just take you to their very general support pages.

    LoL.

Its a router configuration limiting the type of packets being sent/received i think, Only covered it very briefly at college and wasnt really paying attention in that lesson.

The only way to do it is to go into the router to config it.

Found out the game is very short aswell.

Basically it's getting outside packets to go to the right internal IP through a router. And also allowing internal packets to go to the outside world through the same.

NAT is something that will go die a very slow and painful death once IPv6 comes out. (At least for a few hundred years).

Why do some games have that, anyway? Most games these days let you create listen servers. Everytime I've tried to host one, (like in CoD4 or FEAR) it's always worked successfully. Yet, in UT3, I had to configure my router.

Hmm. I had to configure my router to get CoD4 to push my server out over teh webz. Since the ports were the same for WaW, though, I didn't have to change much to get Nazi Zombies working.

I just forward ports as I need to. It's not an issue for me anymore. 6 years ago I had some heartburn getting things working with a cheap LinkSys, but it took me all of 30 seconds to get Borderlands up and running.

Is it just me, or does that link not even work?

Ironic part of all this? Torrenters already have to use NAT Negotiation to seed. So many of the people most capable of getting this to work flawlessly are going to be pirates.

Not gonna disagree with you there. I spend top dollar on good networking equipment so most of this stuff is done automatically.
