Can somebody explain what Steam is?

I keep hearing of this website called Steam and it is mentioned constantly whenever a game is released. I visited the site and it looked pretty interesting. I was thinking about downloading it but I though I might come here first. Can someone tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages of steam? I wish to use it someday. By the way I am a hardcore PC gamer and I am not a noob who is new to the gaming world.

Well if you want to give it a go, download it, and provided that you have either ATI or Nvidia graphics you'll get a couple of free games to try out. I'd really recommend it, since it provides a streamlined system for finding servers, joining friends online and keeping all your games up to date.

        LOL, You guys.

Steam is a server/client hosting program. You download the steam client and can then join groups and chats like Xfire does. You can also buy games through steam to download and play on the steam client.

It does a lot of other things, but that is the main focus of it.

Steam is arguably the best Digital Distribution system for videogames. It has its flaws (running a game without being connected to the internet is sometimes difficult, and running a game without Steam open is impossible), but overall is very easy to use.

I have not purchased a physical game this year as Steam consistently matches or beats retail prices and I am too lazy to go to the store.

          Anyways, follow Hawkers' advice. Now.

Steam is a program that does many things. The main thing is that it's a digital game store. It has tons of games to buy. You download steam, make your account, purchase your game, then you can download it and it will install. You always have the game. For example when you reformat and reinstall steam, you'll see your game(s) in a list and you just click download and it redownloads it for free. The games are linked to your account. DO NOT LOSE YOUR ACCOUNT INFO! It has a buddy list, groups, chats, server lists and other stuff. They also have GREAT discounts pretty often I think. And when you pre-order a game, like L4D2, it will download it and everything before it's released then the day is released it's ready to play!

honestly if you don't have to use it, I wouldn't. Valve does create a few great games (Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, Day of Deafeat, Counterstrike) that require it or I really wouldn't use it as much as I do. Once you get hooked using it, you find that you make fewer trips to your local gaming store and $20 dollars disappears here or there due to some of their 50% off weekends.

Has awesome weekend deals that you wont find anywhere else. I have picked up countless older games that I always meant to try but never got round to it and now they are really cheap/in a deal.

They were selling TF2 over Halloween for $2.48 one day, $2.49 the next day, then back to $2.48 again. It's back to its normal $15 now, but that was epic.

it a game management program that helps you run you games, but it also helps them push to sell games and advertise the hell out of you

IMO its a cheap money grab trick/marketing ploy for kids with credit cards:laugh:

i'll give ya the money grab trick, but its not really by any means cheap. They do well cause they carry alot of titles you can't find at Walmart (not as many rare ones as Gamersgate, but they still have a good variety)....and about the only thing cheap about it is the % off deals they do :P

Yes. Bought two extra games for my mom and sister, lol. Cost about as much a pizza.
