Couldn't we all still have dedicated servers? (kinda)

Couldn't server providers buy copies of the game and start there own game and it would always be running!

    Yes, but the problem is:

    1. It increases costs to the GSPs, which they would have to pass on to customers.
    2. We dont know how many instances could be ran on one server.

So something virtualized may have to be done and virtualization doesnt always work with games. Actually its not recommended at all.

But, technically, it could. Maybe one of the MyIS guys can chime in and shed a better light on what could or couldn't happen.

This was discussed in the initial interview, one of the guys was asking if you could essentially just end up having servers/pc's with a GPU and running the game 24/7 and acting as a dedicated server.

Problem is you have to buy copy of the game for every server/machine like this. Also, I assume there is no IP connect function in the match making and thus it would be hard to even get into your own server.

You know what I liked about COD4, I went over to a friends house, installed my copy of the game on his PC, he tried in (LAN with me and some other friends) and liked it. Then he just bought a copy of the game, went into options and changed the CD key, it even let him keep his stats. Now with steam that is going to be missing.

Hmmm good points. Maybe providers could make a deal with Activison to use the games for free, or pay w/e they would for server files. Even though they would get the game for free, no one would actually be playin it. And this would make the game better for PC players.

I wonder if IW.net or steam will host our stats/unlocks so we don't have to worry about losing them or backing them up.

I dont know for sure, but I dont think it will. The reason I say this is because the game works along side steam, but is not fully integrated into it. Dont know about IWnet though as there is just a little bit of information.

I remember reading somewhere that steam are backing up save game files/ranks and the like for games like Half Life 2/Tf2 when you log in on your account (assuming the game is installled) on another PC.

It was to help promote gaming in net cafes or some such.

I'm not sure which games use Steam Cloud, but not all do. L4D is the only one that comes to mind.

Okay...and how would the server providers generate revenue? I mean, they are in the business of making money. Servers arent free or cheap to maintain.

What you are asking is for them to run a server for free.

No, they do what they do now, charge a monthly fee per slot or X amount for a fully dedicated server.

I honestly dont think we have to worry about the servers, i honestly cant see the community going more than a month before dedicated servers are in place and everything is how it SHOULD have been.

As long as they keep losing money they will need to give us Dedicated Servers, but if people buy the game on release then it will stay as it is.

And if providers could buy the game to use dedicated servers, maybe people could pay a little extra per month till the $60 for the game is paid off. Then the monthly fee could drop down. Or add $60 to the setup fee. I think it could work! Although the "server's" character would need to spectate or something.

Thats it, if anyone who's part of a clan, ever been to an i-event, or played in a gaming ladder buys this game without dedi server functionality will just add to their proof that PC community gaming is dying.

I hadn't pre-ordered it as i was waiting to see what our supermarkets were gonna sell it for, but now it won't matter as i won't be buying it. I just hope the many thousands who signed the petition also stand their ground. It just could prove to be a pivotal moment for PC gaming in time.
