5.1 Surround Sound in Windows 7

Hey all,

Sadly this is my first post, but I tend to lurk a lot. I've been checking out windows 7 lately, and lately while I've been playing I noticed that there is no surround sound! I've googled far and low for a fix, but unfortunately I can't find anything.

I have:
Windows 7 64bit RTM
HT Omega Striker 7.1 - Latest drivers via website
Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition aka bf2142 - Latest patch
Logitech Z-5500 Speakers

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I am using Windows 7 x64 and an XFi and have no problem with surround sound. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure that 5.1 or 7.1 speakers is set in the windows audio control panel.

control panel/hardware and sound/sounds/speakers - configure

Also the same in the sound cards configuration panel. I am unfamiliar with your sound card.

I spent hours looking at test files n whatnot. Most of them work great, and I can test the setup via Windows and the drivers and it seems to be fine that way. Unfortunately in battlefield it turns into stereo :V

Since you use a SB card I guess you can get by using Daniel K's drivers, the HT Omega uses a Cmedia chip and supports OpenAl, but alas nothing works. I even tried taking the openal wrapper from my system32 folder and throwing it into the 2142 folder... That just removed the sound completely.

As you can see I've hooked it up via analog, if that means anything. Thanks for replying :p

Well you obviously know your stuff.

Have you updated OpenAL - I think there was a fairly recent update to the software. What setting do you use in-game - hardware/software etc?

Yeah I went to the OpenAl website, and downloaded the latest version. Tried doing the whole wrapper thing, but that didn't take me anywhere.

As for the audio settings, currently they have been set to Hardware, High Quality, with EAX On. I've tried the software settings as well, and that didn't work.

EDIT: This is an OpenAl test http://frictionalgames.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=521, can you test it to see if it works for you? Because it sure as heck doesn't work for me. (Only front 3 speakers work)

so it's just 2142 or the whole system? if it's the whole system, then its probably driver issues. if it's 2142, then the game probably doesn't support 5.1 under win7 with your sound card yet.

Yup, I'm pretty much convinced its the drivers now. Ugh, and since it's a Cmedia chip HT Omega is just going to defer to those guys to get something done.

To sum it up HT Omega cards can't do 5.1 surround sound, for games like battlefield that require OpenAl. This really drags. Thanks anyways guys.

if it makes you feel any better i can't even use x-fi mode in 2142 even though i have a x-fi card.

I think that has mainly due to the fact that D3D had been disabled in Vista isn't it?

Anyways in the screenshot there is a EX Year 3d button... Well, that just enabled 6.1 for me. This is awesome feller's, sorry for wasting your time.

tl;dr If you have an HT Omega card with 6 ch, press the Ex Year 3D button!
