PunkBuster B Problems

Just purchased BF2 again on Steam after having been away from the game for over 2 years.

Anyways, I keep getting booted due to PunkBusterB.exe heartbeat stopped. I've been searching through various forums and it looks like this is a prevalent issue with no real concrete fix. I had BF2 running for about 30 minutes then stopped playing. Tried playing later on and now I keep getting the PB prompt again. I've tried disabling the AV (NOD 32) and Windows Firewall, didn't work.

I've reinstalled and updated PB, haven't tried the complete deletion tool yet. I've seen fixes on forums ranging from a complete re-install of BF2 to a complete re-install of Windows!!!

Any other words of advice? Should I just refrain from Vanilla and stick to mods?

Im a bit rusty with fixxes for PB, and haven't came across this issue yet.

Try making sure that 'PnkBstrB' status is 'Started' in Services.msc (accessable from Start>Run>type services.msc>Click ok).

Are you running XP ore Vista
If XP when i use my other PC, punkbuster b is not running from start. It starts up under game start. So you could have some program that do not allow b to be started again. I have had some issues after sleep mode. I run the punkbuster testprogram and it worked again. I did not have to restart.
On my normal PC i have Vista and there i had to alloow Punkbuster admin rights both for A and B. I also make sure that it also was allowed in my firewall.

XP on the BF2 rig.

From what I've read, the part I bolded in your post seems to be an issue. The B portion seems to turn off at some point in-game, I can't figure what's causing it though.

I'm going to try re-installing PB fresh and turning off as many background programs as possible.

Hi Try and download the program that test Punkbuster it is called
pbsvc.exe
You can find it here

Run the program (test Service) and you will have more info on your problem.

Forgot to mention: run it after any break and punkbuster will run.
