What so great about Steam????? If it helps prevent hacking and cheating then I'll use it, if not, I won't bother installing another useless program.

It automatically updates the game when the game is updated (although I don't think BF2 will be updated any time soon again, but it's good for every other game for updating) and you don't need a hard copy of the disc. I like having the rough copy and box of the game on my desk though, but even with steam games you download through it you can backup your games and put them on discs yourself.

It also has build in buddy list which totally replaces XFIRE, altho I use both anyhow. Steam rocks seems like EADM was a total flop.
