was there ever a fix for using both CPU's?

This game still does not support dual core CPU's right?

is there a fix to enable the second one?

According to process manager, both 2142 and BF2 have full access to each CPU (check bf2.exe/bf2142.exe's affinity rights).

Obviously, it hammers one CPU more than the others, but some of the workload is shares, so it's definitely not just stuck to one CPU.

if affinity allows a program to be running on 2 cpus it doesnt mean it runs on both of them. if affinity is set to 0 and 1 the game CAN run on both cpu's, but it is a single threaded game so it will only run on one cpu. though multi core cpu's give advantage as you can limit the game to one cpu and all other processes to the rest of the cpu(cores)

But, having watched it, it seems to use both. Although, I suspect that's down to vista or Win7's CPU management rather than BF2 itself.

Basically, BF2142 barges in and yells "I need to process a thing!" So one of the CPUs raises his hand in response and goes "Come over here, I'll take that job."

          And so the program runs.

If the game had been multithreaded, both CPU 1 and 2 would be running BF2142 threads simultaneously.

i have xp so that could be why, it could be it is here too i didnt reallly checked, but bf is a single threaded game, so it cannot run on more cores, expect if there is something done by the system.

yeah for me BF2 uses both cores equally. When I minimize the game and set it to only one CPU, my FPS drops by about 30.

I'm assuming BF2 and BF2142 would be handled the same.

tomeis that doesnt have to mean bf2 uses multiple cores, it can be that there are other processes bound to that cpu(eg system). this can affect the game. for example, if the game asks the system to do something, and it is on the same core, it has to wait for the system to complete. if it is on the other core it can compute something else whilst the system is busy on the other core. multiple cores boost the game performance always, even if the game is single threaded, but if the game is multithreaded it gives a bigger boost to the performance than the boost for a single threaded game.

yea the game ain't optimized to utilize multiple cores but it does utilize them. my quad core utilizes although barely any on some cores.

Then wouldn't the two graphs showing the CPU usage be different? The one handling BF2 should be higher than the one doing other system processes (which isn't many, because I turn stuff off when playing games), right? Because when I run BF2, the graphs are identical.

that can be done by the system, but the game doesnt run on both cores at the same moment, it only runs on one, it can swap cores( if you have lvl3 cache in your cpu). and the graph in task manager is not updated that fast it can show these swaps if it is done more than 2ce a second(quickest update time in my task manager is 0.5 seconds).

Re: was there ever a fix for using both CPU's?

All I know is, the CPU graph when BF2 is playing looks very similar to graphs when other games (multi-threaded games) are being played, like UT3, CoD4, Crysis, etc. They just use different amounts of the CPU. UT3 uses 100%, Crysis uses 80% - 90%, CoD4 uses 60% - 70%, and BF2 uses about the same as CoD4. I don't have L3 cache on my CPU.

So even if BF2 doesn't support REAL multi-threading, and does this "core swapping" that you're saying, it obviously benefits from a dual-core processor, so technically you could say that it DOES support dual-cores, thus answering the OP's question. (Assuming BF2 and BF2142 are the same in this case) Especially since from what I see from my task manager graphs, it DOES support REAL multi-threading, but since you guys are telling me different....

Screenshot is old, and I'm using my old AMD X2 4000+ when I took it, but it does exactly the same thing with my new AMD X2 6000+

I think it's just a problem with the terms here:

So long as we do not confuse "can benefit from" with "supports", when we're talking about software in relation to dual core CPUs, then we're all reading from the same page.

If disabling one core makes the framerate drop, then I can see how it would be tempting to infer from this that the game "supported" dual core CPUs. In fact though, all you have done is deprive the computer of the chance to run a bunch of other stuff in the background (system processes and whatever else you have going on) on one of the cores, so the other one gets more load and, and craps out a bit earlier on when you're trying to get a good framerate.

The games you buy say on the box if it supports multi-core CPU or not. Other than that don't get your hopes up too much. It does not even take a great computer to run this game so I do not see what the big deal is.
